Last month, but no so much lost as just turned around, in the exact same place it happened 8 years ago.
This is the first time it happened:
>hiking on a trail
>map shows the trail turns to cross a stream
>looking for the turn, following the trail
>trail sort of becomes less apparent, then picks up again, the fades again, again and again
>come to a long abandoned dirt road
>don’t remember my route coming to that road when researching maps
>check GPS, shows the trail turned way back
>check map, same thing
>head back down the trail
>still looking for the turn
>check GPS and map again a while later
>passed it up again, in the opposite direction
Super frustrating. The people in charge of the area want to keep it as natural as possible, so there are no trail markers. But it’s so heavily trafficked that a path has been worn by people passing up an easily missed turn. The turn is in a small washout, which leads to a very easy to cross section of the stream, so a path will never be obvious.
When I went back I was certain it must have been me, just making a mistake or something. Or maybe the map was wrong. But it’s just a really common mistake.
