For me, there's nothing more comfy than going to sleep in a tent after a long trek and tasty meal. A good tent that keeps out the bugs, wind and rain. I don't understand how ultralighters can tolerate just a tarp. :3c

I like my tents to have full fabric inner, two vestibules and two doors. Fabric doors which zip to full mesh. Keep the breeze out for lounging around, even when it's not freezing.

I see some guys camping in snow with full mesh inner and they must just lay there fully rugged in their bag the whole time.

Appropriate tent for the weather. Keep vents and such open. Of course if it's really hot just use a hammock, or a mesh tent without the fly.

I can sleep like a rock with no tent at all when it's 25 degrees, so long as I'm in my winter bag and bivy cover... Convincing myself to come out of my bag in the morning with no tent with the wind blowing is a different matter though.

It may look flimsey. It isn't. This set up has withstood very strong winds without anything coming loose. Tent or tarp, though, sturdiness comes from how well you pitch it. I've seen someone almost lose his tent when a huge gust of wind picked it up and deposited it next to a lake.

After a long day riding, I like to setup tent AND tarp. Carrying the extra KG for a 3x3 tarp is one advantage of cycling. If I didn't love riding so much I'd just stay in the tent for a week, it's that comfy. :3

A tarp won't keep out bugs, but permethrin and lavender oil will, and it'll keep decent amounts of wind and rain out. I don't understand how other people can tolerate carrying more than 10kg. :3c

And I'm not even an "ultralighter", I'd call myself a "reasonable" backpacker. I could go even lighter.

This so much. I don't mind washing myself in freezing streams or spending all day at 3000m at -15C and stuff like that, but getting out of my sleeping bag in the morning is a horrible fight every time. Fuck, just getting out of my bed at home takes me an hour.

I only use a tarp and a bag and only a tarp if it feels like rain, though I always have it just in case. That said, I don't hike in the winter when it is snowy. It gets pretty cold here.

If the trip I'm taking is about the TRAIL, I'll take a tarp. I can see a few more miles with less weight on my back

If the trip is about the DESTINATION, I'm more likely to take a tent. If I have to be at a specific location like a lake or a hunting site, I might not be able to find an ideal tarp site. I don't spend the evening on foot looking for a spot sheltered from wind, out of a thermal sink, away from bugs, etc.

So it's like this:

Hiking the PCT -Tarp

Fishing a Mountain Lake - Tent

Monitoring the bird species in a field (work) - Tent

Solo weekend trip exploring some new area - Tarp

Bro, I'm in the other side of the spectrum, I'm a skinny small faggot (170cms) who wants to become the porter of the team of 2 tall (184cms) faggots.
Mainly I just like to put a minimum of 4 liters of water for day hikes on my backpack (I call myself "the camel"). Being 55 kgs I like to carry at least 10-15 kgs. I know this is retarded but I see myself carrying 30+ kgs in the next few years.

The comfy moment for me:

Out in Southeast Oklahoma with my dog by Robber's Cave. 5 day hike in spring. Starting a nice small fire, catching small game/fish for food and cuddling with my dog and sleeping under a small tarp.

I put that dog to work too, he has his own backpack!
