Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a job at a remote mountain mine somewhere so I can lead a more rural existance.

have you ever looked at getting a job at in mineral exploration? If you want /out/ with a good paying job thats your ticket. Camp staffers and general laborers are always needed, assistance for geos is never a bad job either but means you will be lugging rock samples around all day.

Diamond drilling / drillers helpers are in sort supply too, but that takes serious training and you need to be tough to throw drill pipe all day.

Depends on what your doing at a mine, there are hundreds of different positions out there in the sector.

Exploration geology is probably the best place for OP, that or environmental techs assistant. You stay /out/ but make good money.

depends on the site, some mines / projects have insurance allowing even non licensed workers to operate equipment and pick ups on site, while others have strict setups but usually offer paid training time to acquire those tickets.

Exploration geos use data from air / ground surveys, sampling programs and many other sources to help identify and examine the economic potential of different mineral deposits to determine if their worth putting in the money to mine them. Its honestly a lot of work school wise but its really worth the money. You can also go the shorter route and become a geotechnical assistant, the guy who assists geos in the field with sampling or general work. There are dozens of sub fields to in the space. You will often find yourself working in very remote locations or in a lab setting, it depends on where and what you want to do with the job.

There is a gold rush going on right now, and geos / assistants are few and far between in the industry.

What specifically?
Driving a truck all day would be boring af.
Mechanic would be all good. Geologist? Blasting? Drilling? Light vehicle maintenance? Planning?
I worked in support roles for mines for years. Travelled 3 weeks each month, was fun for a while. Great money.
Downside was I could never switch off after hours. Even on overseas holiday I had my phone and couldn’t relax.

Say an underground loader needed a critical part from overseas.
The mine was losing over 20K/hr until it was going again. You’d be expected to have a progress update at any time of day or night.
Or if it’s a 1 man contracting operation, their entire income is on hold.
Now multiply by hundreds of customers and thousands of machines, you get a lot of stressed out people constantly on your case. It was kinda like being a doctor or cop - people are never calling you to let you know everything’s going well.
Burned out and stopped giving a fuck.

My buddy runs a gold mining operation. It fucking sucks. If they hit gold they make money, if they don't, they get dick. You gotta order everything you want upfront because it gets flown there. If you run out of smokes, you're fucked. They work 16 hours a day in shit weather and water.

running your own operation on a small scale or even on a wider scale like you see on stupid shows like Gold Rush are rarely ever profitable. Anything and everything can and does go wrong, from equipment failures to permitting issues. I work in the small scale space too on and off and it is where i ve seen the most people get ruined.
Working in corporate mining at least makes things a bit safer but your still at the mercy of the markets.

Its serious money but its also a LOT of work, and not all geos are any good at what they do either. There are loads of geos out there that make money but end up making major errors costing projects serious money.

I drive a mid duty tow truck in a rural area and it's awesome. Hours are retarded so I won't do it forever though. I do a lot of work in the small city near me but I live a half hour from it and a lot of my work is borderline in the bush.

I'm currently in school for geography with a geology minor. Not wanting to turn this into a career advice thread but the sort of thing you're describing sounds exactly the career I'm looking for. So geotechnics is the field I should be aiming for?

yes but look for an economic geology course as well, it comes in handy. Possibly take a prospecting course as well, its absolutely ridiculous how few geologists cant properly ID gold anymore.

I work on a diamond rig in Australia. It's not a bad way to spend time in the outdoors and getting paid good money to do it but of course exploration drilling in the outback isn't going to be anything like drilling in Canada. It's also fly in/fly out and not residential based. I usually take the 4WD and go camping somewhere nice during my week off for the real /out/ enjoyment.

a general in the field prospecting course with some basic classroom time. There are loads of different courses for this hosted by regional mining offices in the US and Canada for IDing economic minerals and how to do basic things like sampling / claim staking. These are things that surprisingly get missed by most university level courses, and its also why i dont take most geos seriously anymore. If you cant ID what minerals you have your no good as a geo.

heres one for alaska, you just have to look up the regulator for mining in your state / province.

BC for example has I think 4 regional departments for mining on its own, specifically tasked with helping exploration firms and prospectors with new discoveries.
