Actually it's people without poles that get made fun of. You look like amateurs out there with gripping your shoulder straps looking like a chicken. What do your arms do all day when you hike? Just hang around uselessly? Instead of turning into two extra legs...

I wish I used them in my 20s. I still have bad knees because of a backpacking trip when I was 26. Lots of hills without poles for several days of hiking is a shit idea

Added stability.
You can travel farther, faster than you can without them. I bushwack a lot and they are invaluable for varied terrain. They help going up and they help going down...also great for crossing creeks and rivers etc...
