I used to love going on walks around the neighborhood/city in the summer and fall, but in the winter it just seems too cold. Or maybe it's not. Do any of you guys go on walks in freezing temperatures and if so how do you stay warm?

I know my tent is crazy one sided as far as weight but I could manage lol.. It had crazy winds all night too and when morning came my fingers just had zero dexterity to roll it up good.

Just bundle up until you're not so cold.

I'll admit it takes a few days of cold before I'm acclimatised to it myself. But being out in winter is just so beautiful. I take long walks at night in the moonlight on the track they compress for cross country skiers. There's never anyone else out. Just alone in the soft moonlight and cold, walking in the woodlands.

how long do you stay out in it? how do you keep your hands and face from drying out and cracking up?

My hands literally turn red like they're burned if exposed to 6 degree F weather for more than like 10 minutes. Face getting blasted with cold air isn't fun either.

You just need warm clothes and it's no problem, specially if you're just walking around in the neighborhood or city, that is easy.
I also stay at cabins and go on skitrips. When you're on trips like that which might make you sweat, again it comes down to the clothes and you won't be uncomfortable at all.

I was out tracking coyotes most of the afternoon. It has warmed up a bit here, but its still pretty chilly. I take a little daypack with extra layers and use the pack to carry stuff I have taken off. Pic related, lots of yotes moving earlier.

On the off-chance that you grew up in the tropics and have only recently moved to a region of the world where it actually gets cold,

YES, your extremities are supposed to turn red when they get cold. That's completely fucking normal, and as long as your core is warm (your core is your torso), it is perfectly safe to let your extremities get a little chilly. If your fingers or toes start to get numb, that's when you know to warm them up, but even numbness is not a sign of permanent, or even temporary, damage. Again, it's completely normal and safe as long as you warm them up right away.

YES, your skin will dry out (gasp!!!). Who gives a fuck. What are you, some kind of beauty queen. Jesus.

NO, cold air is "not fun." to expose your body to. It won't kill you, though. Holy fuck.

Just buy a proper fucking coat and walk around outside sometime. Experiment with different layers to see what you're comfortable in. Start off with two coats and three sweaters, or generally enough to keep you warm, and then some. Then gradually remove layers to see how little clothes you need to stay comfortable.

I really hope you were born in the tropics, and I am not helping out again if you are from any of the traditional Anglophone countries, including Australia.

Add a polar fleece sweater if it's colder but still above 0, maybe a hat
Add light jacket if it's even colder

Not him, but I grew up in Southern California and now live in North East Ohio because of work. It fucking sucks. I've never had to deal with winter so now I'm just trying to figure out how to stay warm while /out/ in the winter.

No, I visited colder areas and went snowboarding in the mountains. But hell it could be 50 degrees in the mountains with several feet of snow and a sunny day here. I've been to colder regions but didn't spend extended time outside. It's also different when you visit some place for a week than it is moving there and dealing with an entire winter and all new wardrobe.

Visiting those places are fun and when you're cold you just go inside, do something else, or don't mind it because it's new and "fun" and you only have a week of it.

hey guys, OP here again. Day 3. It was 9F outside and I discovered a way to walk around in it without freezing to death.

Long underwear did wonders. I walked back home from campus wearing my usual outfit of jeans and a heavy jacket, and my discovery of the magic of a beanie hat yesterday to keep my ears warm. My legs under my jeans however, were freezing. At home, I had some long underwear which I put on and then walked back out again, and it did SO MUCH GOOD. My legs were way way warmer than they were.

Then I walked to the gas station and bought some gloves which convert between being fingerless and a mitten! They're awesome! I walked around again for another 10 minutes just to see how it was and I was pretty much fine even though it was like 9F outside.

Great stuff. Feels great to no longer have to be afraid of going out in the cold.

If cold, add another layer. Slept outside in -8C the other night, felt so fucking good to constantly feel that tingle of cold despite being warm. No roof either, just sleeping bag and tarp around upper and lower body to protect against cold. I love watching the sky.

I should've mentioned that I slept outside close to home in order to test a sleeping bag that was without info about its capacity. It's probably a -5/0 affair, but I had a fat jacket on my as well.

yeah man.. I live on the east coast just about 50 miles north from Boston.. So as far as mountains go I get sort of lucky with the white mountains etc.. This picture was on Mount Jackson.. Which keep in mind is only a 4,000 footer but the height wasn't the point in this picture. I spent 2 nights out there going at a really slow pace and i mean reaaaally slow lol as most of the time a 4,000 footer is easily just a day trip.. It was pretty awesome. Here is a picture at the summit.

I personally love going out in the winter times. Especially since I live i Denmark which means that civilisation is always (and sadly) very near. But a thick layer of snow just silences everything and gives a great feeling of isolation which I guess is one of the most important thing i chase when going out. Another reason why I love the winter is that I by now have a lot of great gear for going outdoors which really comes into use that time of the year. In the summer I can do with very little, but in the winter I really put a lot of shit into good use, which for me feels kinda satisfying.
Two years ago we had a ton of snow here and around -20 C. At that time I went out on a 3 day hike with two friends of mine, and while I have done more "hardcore" stuff, that trip really left an impression on me.
