They don't care about controlling it unless it gets close to a major city or a injun resort; those are the only cases that the publicity would do them more harm than good. Otherwise some random house or neighborhood in the woods on fire? Looks great on the news, inspires fear in the rest of them that maybe they are next and they should give more tax money for 'hazard pay'.
The only people that do anything are smokejumpers, but they are managed by people who want to drag on fire season as wide as they can. You would be insulted how much money goes into a single day of a fire camp.
