How long had you been into outdoors when you decided to bit the bullet and upgrade to more expensive gear? I think I've outgrown my current stuff but the idea of coooonsuming makes me uncomfortable.

It lined up with when I started climbing. Needed a bigger pack so I got that, camping near rocky areas convinced me to upgrade my pad. I guess I'll get a new tent and bag eventually. Been looking at markdowns on steepandcheap

Maybe 2 and a half years? But what matters isn't really how long you've been doing it but how often you go out. If you're seeing problems with your current kit upgrading is definitely a good idea, just be intentional about it, upgrade what you really need but don't get suckered into spending big money to save half an oz on your utensils or whatever.

you don't really have to consoom to get good stuff either. return scams are really easy on most outdoor websites.

if your current gear is up to snuff, don't buy replacements. if it isn't meeting the demands of your activity, such as a sleeping bag not being warm enough, first search for simple fixes such as getting a small polyester fleece blanket as a liner. once you have some experience with what you actually need from your gear, then find whatever meets those minimum specs while still maintaining function and durability. consooming is when you buy shit you don't need and won't properly use cuz it looks cool.

Its less about time and more about significant impact on capability. I either want it to allow me to do a different thing (ex: a different season) or allow me to do something substantially better (hike longer, take less effort). A good example was down sleeping bags. The down was not cheap, but now I sleep more comfortably in all sorts of weather with a bag thats lighter and packs smaller which allows to hike longer distances, harder trails, and more days.

I upgraded when I actually understood what I was doing. Going from a Coleman tent, ancient sleeping bag, and cook kit that weighed 30 pounds to a single man Kelty, decent synthetic bag, and a compact, lightweight cook kit changed my mind from "camping is meh" to "I love camping". I currently car/canoe/boat camp, but I can see myself biking/backpacking in the near future with minimal upgrades. You don't need top of the line, but decent gear makes a trip so much more enjoyable.

I camp 6-8 times per season, have done fairly hardcore 2 week canoe outings, and have convinced numerous friends and family to get in to the hobby. Seethe elsewhere.

Same here. You need to have had a few backpacks or sleeping bags to even know what is quality.

That is why noobs should buy everything used, you can sell it for the same price, get 3 or 4 items to test per season and eventually know what kind of gear you really like.

Some of the stuff I use I've been using for over a decade. It still works and buying a replacement for said items wouldn't provide some extravagant upgrade that changes my life.

i'm about the same position. got a good backpack (old kelty ext frame used $30), wool sweater (USMC used $30), some bugnets (cheap) and a tarp (shit) and a great sleeping bag ($100 new) and some misc cook stuff cobbled together.

now i'm getting real and want to DIY my own good tarp+bugnet, buy a hammock, buy a 2-3L shallow pot, and make a stove out of a coffee can (wood) or cat food (gas) or something. it'd be so nice if my shelter covered 2x the space while stuffing down to 1/2 the space of my shit tent, for example.

medkit+toiletries are fine, it all fits well into a small cubic bag and is capable of performing up to minor surgery like removing a low caliber bullet or stitching a stab

i've gradually been upgrading my gear the entire time. sometimes the upgrade is the more expensive piece of gear, sometimes i replace an expensive piece of gear with a cheap one. sometimes its something i make myself. sometimes its something i choose not to take, or add. i try not to even know the price until i've already decided i am going to buy the gear, and figuring out if i can impulse buy it or need to save up is secondary.
i have some expensive pieces in my loadout some very cheap ones and i would say if you take out like 1 or 2 splurge items that i probably got at rei garage sales or second hand market the total cost of my loadout isn't that high for what i consider to be the absolute top of the line possible gear, for me and my time innawoods. I have a couple thousand in gear probably, but that covers a few outdoor activities outside of just strictly hiking like snowshoes and shit, and i've bought it all over 10+ years. everything i use is good enough to last that long except like, my shoes and socks.
i would say the most expensive thing i spent money on thats a waste (costco $10 ones are legendary and this year's ones are extra good i bought multiples to leave in the car for ppl who forget theirs) are my tent pole style 3 fold trekking poles. i went with the aluminum over carbon because i like to be able to bend them back into shape and be hard on them. they fucking O W N and every single downside to bringing trekking poles is removed. the only catch is theyre usually like $200-300 minimum. they're marketed as for climbing but are goat for everything.

4-season tent, light weight, low cost and it packs down small enough to fit in a handlebar bag on my bike.
Thought about Hilleberg og Helsport, but they are both about 50% more expensive, and I don't see any clear advantage to either.
