Even mountain men who lived in the wilderness very recently weren’t completely removed from civilization, returning to town occasionally for supplies. Those men lived in substantial shelters and had abundant supplies they brought with them. Same with home steamers; they had a lifeline to a town for whatever they might need.
Living in the wilderness off of the land by yourself isn’t feasible. It’s a fun LARP but it can’t really be done. Now being homeless, yeah, you can totally do that. Go live in the woods on the edge of town like a real bum. That’s doable.
