Anyways, how do I into tree canopy camping? There are lots of parks and conservation land near me. I've stealth camp my area before but how would I into pic related? It seems it would open up a world of camp availability

you cant afford it if you cant even afford gas. portaledge, rope, protection and harnesses are all expensive
700 usd for the platform and another 400 usd for the rain fly
250 usd for a 60m metre rope
harness, ascenders, descenders 400 usd
if you have no money just sleep under an overpass like a hobo

I dont think that's entirely true. When I was enlisted we used Swedish seats to repel. That's nothing more than fancy tied climbing rope

they cut off circulation because there's no padding just hard rope into your legs, you cant hang in it for very long
no gear loops to carry your protection that you need to place as you go up
its an expedient solution for when you don't have anything better

If I forgo the portaledge and just sleep in a hammock, I think I can invest that money into a harness, belay, rope, etc. I think I should be able to do it under 150 usd?

Professional tree climber chiming in.
>You will spend more on a reasonably safe set up, than you will on a hundred gallons of gas.
My harness is over $400, my rope is around $180, my ascender/descender is around $400.
And add in rope grabs, carabineers, loop runners, positioning lanyard and the like? Another $300 on that $980. How tall is the tree? How far is it to the branch above the first branch? You will need a throw line and wieght, and the practice to use it.
Can you cheap out a bit? Sure you can. Get a heavy as fuck but cheaper saddle for $250, use a prussik cord and pulley for your ascender/descender for $70.
Rock climbing harnesses are not the same as a tree harness. The climbing style is very different despite the similarities. You need to be able to sit in your harness, while suspended by your life line. You need to be able to use a positioning lanyard to allow you to climb in a crown with any reasonable efficiency while remaining safe.
If you are at all serious about this, look up recreational tree climbing, SRT and DRT climbing. Then you will know your actual starting point.
Sleeping inna tree is a long way away.
