gatekeeping is an essential part of making sure the wilderness stays wild. by analogy, think of a library back in the 1930s. quiet, solemn, respectful place of learning -- and compare that to a library today. Getting people who didn't previously care enough about the outdoors to start going just means they'll ruin it. litter, music, graffiti, cars being broken into.. etc.
if you're old enough to remember the internet before cell phones, same thing. (or if you're even older, you might remember how much better and more civil usenet was before the endless september started)
