I think trying to use binoculars at much later than this isn't really something you would do anyways unless you're looking up at the lit up sky like you mentioned. So by that assessment, 10x42s for compact size, or 10x50s for better near dusk/dawn viewing. I can assure you though that the lenses in these are absurdly clear. I don't really notice a color difference at all. I have been using them for long range bird and turtle identification, as well as the obvious fun of spying on people.

I even contemplated going 8x42 for stability while on the move, but opted for the 10s since they were on sale. glad I did. I have pretty steady hands though and don't really struggle to keep them stable.
