I've heard they're good down to 50 degrees, but that seems a bit optimistic to me. Also, considering military surplus has mostly dried up these days, a lot of what used to be dirt cheap is now "collectable", and most of what you can find now is just Chinese copies, are they worth it for the cost?

Make sure you are getting real military surplus and not one of those awful chinesium knockoffs. Also, modern woobies have a zipper so it's literally a light weight sleeping bag that can also be used as a blanket.

What can you expect for warmth though? I've handled one in the past before I knew what it was (otherwise I would have bought it and tried it myself since it was just a few buck), and I have a hard time believing you'd be able to sleep down to 50 degrees with it due to how light and thin it was.

They're fine for spring and summer, and you can get by in early fall if you're wearing layers. They're not a replacement for a sleeping bag in the colder fall months and especially not winter, though.

They are okay and they are comfy. 50F is probably pushing it. Consider them like a light climashield blanket, which is basically what it is. If you want you can add snap closures or tie it off and make a quasi quilt. The only knock is the weight at about 22oz which is going to be blow own by down or even a heavier climashield quilt with a lighter nylon, but you can get a good woobie for 35 bucks so there's no reason not to have one. I use mine constantly as a travel blanket and for very hot weather in the hammock.

And the volume. I pack mine in an old xs sea to summit waterproof stuffsack, but it barely fits. It's still probably almost 5 inches across and 10 inches long of a fairly subpar sleep system. When I'm trying I can get my down quilt down to half the size.

I still use my woobie, and wish it had zippers like someone said the new ones do now earlier in the thread. I keep it in my emergency box in my truck most of the time but have started using it on summer trips now since my old snugpack 50 degree bag finally got so nasty I threw it away. I don't think I would buy a woobie seeing as I much preferred my old snugpack bag, but I own one from timed served.

I'm interested in a simple blanket myself. Sleeping bag is uncomfy as fuck, my quilt is sown filled and really only useable when it's below 5°C because it's so warm.

Have ordered a Therm-A-Rest Honcho Poncho, a Miltec Woobie and a cheap Honcho Poncho knockoff to test.

The Original Honcho Poncho came today. It's only useable for manlets. As a poncho it lacks a string to reduce the face hole. Also bad stitching. I expected more for 100€.

I am. Can you drop some search terms and what experience you have? Money is really no objective (well, within reason) if the blanket is very good.

Perfect blanket would be 140cm wide, 220cm long, less than 1kg of weight, good down to 10°C, no down. Inner side would be brushed cotton/polyester mix, outer would be DWR treated polyester or nylon.

It would be a closeable at the feet and have a hood to wear under a poncho.

Color would be dark blue, brown, olive, black or grey, no camo shit.

Most blankets fail at the size.

The woobie is not a meme. It does require some knowledge and proper application to stay comfy though. Your woobie should be paired with a poncho on top for maximum heat retention. Sometimes if it's really cold it requires spooning with another person, and their woobie/poncho goes on top as an extra layer. Skin to skin contact is mandatory.

So yeah if you wanna get naked and spoon your camping buddy woobies are the shit.

This is also a fair point. It does not compress well. Honestly a better option for many is to go order a couple yards of climshield and argon and just make your own blanket. The material does have some stretch but any sewing machine can do it and that basically gives you what you're looking for and you can choose a heavier weight climashield for the end product.

If they're cheap, and you're already carrying 50 lbs of milsurp and battle rifle, I'm sure you won't notice the extra 2 lbs to stay warm on your typical summer night.

Remember, you should have a 20 degree buffer between the lowest predicted nightly temp and the comfort rating of your sleep system. If your woobie only keeps you warm down to 50 degrees then the lowest predicted nightly temp you should be sleeping in is 60 to account for the unreliability of a general forecast to a specific area.

If you actually want something useful in the same form factor that meets different needs get an ultralight quilt. I swear by my Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 degree. I pair it with a regular 9x5 rain poncho and a reusable space blanket as a ground sheet on 2-3 day trips. It's leaps and bounds better than the woobie in terms of space, weight, versatility and warmth. It's not very durable though.

That's awful anon. I got a knockoff poncho tarp off of Amazon for about $20 and even that thing at least has a draw string for the face (although it feels like a cheap shoelace).

Eventually I will get a true USGI poncho but for a cheap $20 thing my poncho turned out pretty good.

never heard these called woobies. grew up with my dad bringing his 'ranger blanket' everywhere. I have one now and use it with with a wool blanket and a treated marine canvas as a bedroll setup. I like it. it's lightweight and pairs well with other gear

Biggest problem I have with cheap chinese ponchos is that they don't cover the legs. I got to try my dad's surplus GI poncho and that thing was the tits by comparison. Plenty of length to keep my legs dry even with a full pack on. The chinese ones on the other hand feel like they're made for children.

50 is about accurate, but you have to mummy wrap yourself in it to make it work. as far as using it like a normal blanket 60 and up. I've used it in less than 50 but I would not recommend, you wont get hypothermia but you wont sleep either. I cant think of anything better for mid summer camping. even wool blankets have an upper limit were they are too hot to use.

Anyway, got the stuff i ordered earlier:

Therm-a-Rest honcho Ponch: Well made, feels very warm on the sofa, but the material is loud and clings to your skin. The hood can't be closed.

Nature-Hike Honcho Poncho Clone: Not as well made, you see loose threads. Feels warmer on the sofa. The material is loud and clings to your skin. The hood can be closed. Between the Honcho Poncho and this, i would take this.

Mil-Tec Poncho Liner: Made from polyester, the material is silent and does not cling to your skin. It's warm enough. Larger than the Thermarest or Naturehike poncho liners. Has no hood nor opening for your head, it's just a blanket. Manufacturing is lowest quality.

I keep the cheapest option, the Mil-Tec poncho liner.

Gonna piggyback this thread because I don't want to start a new one. I have a woobie but I run cold when I sleep and the thing can hardly keep me warm in a damn car on a cool night.

I know that wool blankets are warmer and I wouldn't mind the weight/size, since as another anon already mentioned, the woobie is very voluminous. However I'm not knowledgable about blankets or their makers, so is there a brand or specific type anyone would recommend on a whim and I can start from there?

Volume means warmth. A thin blanket can never be warm, a thick blanket will always be warm.

Filling is either polyester or down.

Down is easier to compress into a small volume than polyester filling.

Polyester dries quickly and keeps you warm even if moist. Down is hard to dry and will not isolate when moist.

If you are hiking, a highly compressible down sleeping bag is the way to get maximum warmth in a small volume and weight.

In a car camping situation, get a rectangular style sleeping bag with heavy and polyester filling. Comfort bonus if the inside is cotton.
