The bites take hours to start itching; once you feel one, it’s too late, and you’ve already been attacked/infested. And once the bite is itching, the chigger is long gone. Personally, chigger bites last over a week (mosquito bites only last about 15 minutes on me).
There are only wives tales about chiggers burrowing under the skin, so people apply various things to the bites to suffocate it (Vaseline and nail polish are common). It’s all bullshit though.
