I prefer the fishing in Montana. There's high alpine lakes, bigger trout streams, and huge Northern pike in the backwaters. You can also catch huge bass and walleye in reservoirs, for a more front country experience.
The kayaking is more of a draw. The alpine lakes aren't too accessible. Flathead lake is pretty but nowhere in the same league as Superior. Superior is its name. That being said, there's probably 1000x more whitewater in MT, and hundreds more opportunities for expeditions and multi day floats on rivers.
Montana has Glacier and Yellowstone. And massive, massive amounts of public land.
While the U.P. is beautiful, it doesn't have the mind blowing end-of-the-world feeling I get in the high Rockies.
I feel like a traitor typing this, though. I wouldn't love Montana if Michigan hadn't raised me to be who I am. And I miss the forest in the winter. Michigan is much more hospitable.
