On FB, in the app, tap “groups” on the bottom then put in keywords. I did “Pennsylvania hiking” and pic are some of the results. Then click “join group.” Pretty straight forward.
If you’re looking for people your age, the best bet is to just post that you’re looking for hiking buddies, and the type of hiking you like to do. Don’t be a weirdo and say they have to be your age. Let people respond then message them privately. If someone is too old or too young, just ignore them or brush them off if they privately message you.
I ran a MeetUp group with 120+ people for several years. Groups and trips that are open to everyone will always attract old people who aren’t as physically capable as some of the younger members. So if you see a group trip that isn’t specifically listed as difficult, assume the group will be older and the hike more laid back.
If the trip is listed as difficult, but there’s no screening process, avoid it. If they don’t know who’s showing up then they have no idea if everyone is capable or prepared. We always had meetings before larger, harder trips just so people could meet face to face (it put the girls’ minds at ease), we could discuss logistics, and we could stress the difficulty of the hike.
