Whenever I go hiking I try to buy something from a local store near where I parked (a piece of cheese, a coffee and croissant, whatever) so I'm contributing at least a tiny bit to the local economy, but I'm not going to pay to walk on a fucking trail where the biggest "maintenance" being done to it is painting red/white markers on rocks every once in a couple years. Which is always done by unpaid volunteers anyway.
I do my small part by always bringing an extra trash bag and picking up any trash that I find. Fortunately it's actually quite rare to find trash along the tougher trails that I like. Hikers that frequent those tend to be very respectful here, I usually just find one odd piece of protein bar wrapper that was lost accidentally.

The super accessible """trails""" that are really just dirt roads going to a ""refuge"" that is a glorified restaurant tend to be 10x dirtier than harder trails, because the general public are fucking assholes, and actual paved roads frequented by masses of cyclists are the worst of all. There's a popular cycling road around here that I hiked along once and I ended up filling two entire fucking trash bags full of bottles and cans and I hardly made a dent in it. Absolutely disgusting pigs.
Also the best hikes are the ones where you walk all day and don't cross another single human being. Really rare here, since northern italy is overpopulated as shit.
