Dear Box Turtle,
I ran you over with my car today. It was an accident. I feel horrible. Hopefully you died very quickly -- I hear turtles die instantly if their shell is broken so badly.
You were just a normal box turtle, but I think you were beautiful. To be honest, hitting you was probably the worst thing to happen to my mental health in a long time.
I wonder what you were doing in the road. Maybe the big machines scared you. I should have been paying more attention.
You grew up, which is a feat as a wild animal. I hope you had already lived a long life. I know you probably were looking forward to the other side of the road. It was rainy, so the ground would have been nice and wet for you. There were probably some tasty bugs in there, too. I'm sorry that I took that away from you.
I wish that I had paid more attention, and I've certainly learned my lesson. You were hard to see, but I should have swerved. I know you're in heaven now, doing whatever box turtles do. I hope you've forgiven me in your little turtle heart.
That's really all I have to say. I couldn't stop thinking about what I did, so I drew this little picture. All of God's creatures as very beautiful -- especially innocent little ones like you. I wish I had parked and moved you to safety. I wish I had slowed down.
