What water filter do you use?

I dislike sterilizing water and prefer using chlorine when I do, but I've got a long-distance hike coming up where water quality is questionable, and figure a filter is a good investment.
I'm looking in the <$100 range but would be happy to hear arguments for better ones.

Also filter general thread.

Msr miniworks is my goto standard. Smallest filter pores and totally field serviceable. I've been using it for 4 years and never treat my water with tabs or anything afterwards and haven't gotten sick. That includes filtering nasty pondwater too.

For a three-day excersion, would it be more practical to buy a 100 oz bladder, or boil/use chlorine/other filter on the local riverater?

I bought a msr sweetwater and have used it extensively with no problems. I can pump about 1L in about a minute or so. You will have to clean it in the field at some point because the filter gets clogged and pumping becomes difficult. Fortunately they made cleaning the filter very easy and the come with a cleaning kit. I've been looking at the platypus gravity filter. Any anon have experience with this filter?

I've been curious about gravity filters too but most seem rather thin and subject to tears or punctures and then you'd be SOL. It's a cool concept, I'd just like to hear how they hold up and how much time it takes to filter the water.

Let's see. 8lbs of water or a 14 oz water filter. Hell you could bring some coffee filters (for straining) and chlorine drops and come in under 3 oz. I'm sort of an UL fag so you may not find carrying 8 lbs of water ridiculous.

Sawyer squeeze, mother funsters. Anyone who complains about durability is either not back-flushing the filter when it gets dirty, or squeezing too hard. Probably a combination.

I have the one in your pic(except mine has a superior prefilter system), it's pretty fucking heavy and takes up a good amount of space in your pack. You'd probably be better off with the katadyn hiker pro, it's in your price range. I keep a sawyer all in one as a backup but don't really like gravity systems as much as pump systems.

Those work but your wallet is gonna have a bad time if you use them often. In the long run it's much cheaper to invest in one of the aforementioned units.

The lifestraw is definitely a good backup to have though.

I don't use a filter and I never have. I use Aqua Mira, and it's perfectly adequate at killing virtually every living thing you could find in water. If there are tadpoles or other macroorgamisms swimming around in the water, I may use a bandana to pre-filter the water.

Feels good being post-filters. Those things are stupidly heavy and slow.

Unless you are going to be in a place with only shallow puddles to filter through I would go with a gravity filter. They are super easy, fast and effective, plus they require no work other than filling up the bag

most filters are ineffective against viruses yet, viruses are extremely fragile and easily killed by boiling. so are almost all bacteria harmful to humans. the only thing boiling isn't effective against is some bacterial spores and those are easily killed by chlorine. not boiling water just because of some unlikely bacteria spores is fucking stupid.

There are several effective ways to treat water and really it's down to preference and environment.

Like the sawyer minis are easy and lightweight, but they don't do well in cold temps, so if you're going somewhere cold it's probably not the best option.

I usually recommend bringing some aqua-tabs as a back up for "just in case" reasons.

The CDC and the WHO also provide a lot of information on what sort of diseases are prevalent in different areas, so it's usually a good idea to check that out as well and see what you're up against.

this is the model of my Old Steripen ; in Australia water tends to be either : Clear or Salt - and if it is Clear then the Steripen can kill it. [Inland you need an Osmosis set-up]
I have once needed to "filter" water from a lake containing decomposing vegetable matter [a suspended dune-lake in the sub-tropics , but fresh] and I used my Silk Sleeping-bag liner.
But other than than that : Kill it with [UV] Fire and drink.
