I usually don't even throw a tarp over my hammock. I camp in a high desert forest so I take advantage of that to sleep under the stars and the beautiful forest canopy.

Hammock shill here. If your hammock doesn’t have an attached bug net, there are two options, neither of them really great.

I made this tarp with integral net myself
It's great for the north (I'm in Finland) when the weather's not too bad, keeps the bug out, very light and quick to set up

I'll be honest I pretty much only ever use one or 2 tarp set ups when camping. The Holden and the pyramid. I got double a lightbulb essentially from big W attached to my hiking stick. Always too sketched out my eucalyptus tree branches to sleep under them so free standing works for me.

I only used my tarp with good weather but I wouldn't mind using it with rain but I'm worried that water can still get into my stuff with just a ground sheet, is this pointless? Also I could use it to camp under rocks where I'm protected from the rain but water might pool/run

I'm getting this way. I like having some options but I might switch from a square to a rectangular tarp to get a little more length. About 80% of the time it's an A frame or lean-to and in light weather dropping a side down cover it. In bad weather I think I can still do a hexamid or similar of needed or star tent sorta pitch.

Ahh I see what you mean. You could always just put rocks/sticks around the edge of a normal groundsheet to raise/fold it up if you are concerned. I've never had that problem tho when tarp camping. As long as you don't place your shelter somewhere retarded you should be good

i forgot what that exact model is one of my friends used to have one for the winter.

Well I made some patterns, bought rip stop and mosquito net from extremtextil (I'm a euro, go to ripstop by the roll if you are American), then sewn ripstop together, then net, added the loops and finally sealed the seams with silicone.

I actually made two of them with a friend and the price was about 50€ each including shipping.

If you want you can give me your snap or email or something I can send you my patterns and help you if you need.

half the thread is reee'ing over tarps not being tentlike enough and the other half is reee'ing over them being to much like a tent. the point of a tarp setup is that it can be anything you need it to be depending on conditions. my preferred setup is just to sleep in the open on a ground sheet, but obviously that is somtimes not possible due to weather conditions so I carry a tarp.

A nonfreestanding tent is a shaped tarp. A bivy is a combined groundsheet and rain fly. It's all iterations of the same. But a shaped tarp had more pitching options than a traditional tent (inner/no inner, high pitch or low, etc). A flat tarp has even more pitching options. They have different strengths for sure, wouldn't take a flat tarp into the alpine or perhaps the desert, but its a whole sorta feel to wake up in a lean-to or half-mid rather than in a the normal dome tent.

I got a couple AliExpress specials to give tarp camping a chance.
The big bivy is sized for a child, as my shoulders touch the sides and still get bit by mosquitoes.
The tarp is a fire something brand 15D sheet and is great, I just need to get better at setting it up, and get some stakes.

I live where there are a lot of scorpions, snakes, ticks, and mosquitoes. So I need to find a better netting system.

Yeah, it’s exactly the same thing with absolutely no differences at all. It just has a floor that attaches to the walls, often via a bug net, a vestibule, and a door for entry, and can only be pitched one way. But yeah, it’s totally the same thing.

But it is basically the same when it comes to function of weather. A mid with an inner is just a single wall trekking pole tent with a removable inner. Shelters are all pretty much the same, just depend on how much flexibility or customization there is. And it's useful because I'm a 6ft+ Chad I fit into very few complete tent setups but I can buy a 12ft tarp anywhere. Throw in a bug net and bobs your uncle.

Bike camping is pretty comfy.

Tarp is an great addition to the swag. It keeps the dew and the rain off.

It's also a nice place to sit out of the sun after a few hours on the trails.

I used to use an old army hutchie, but this Alton goods tarp is much nicer.
