What is the best camera for /out/?
It'd have to be weather sealed, durable, light, but also takes good enough photos of the various things outside.

I carry around a D7500 and a couple lenses. Yeah, it’s much heavier than a phone. But I want good photos. I think it’s worth it.

If you’re backpacking, and photography is just a hobby not a job, look at mirrorless aps-c cameras of you really want an interchangeable lens.
There are also good non-interchangeable lens cameras that have good sensors and are of course even smaller and lighter

Olympus is fully weather sealed and if you really want to drag it through the mud, get a OMD-1 mark3. It's Micro-Four-Thirds, so the sensor is smaller, but if you're mainly using it /out/, then getting huge bokeh probably isn't your concern. Choose which interchangeable lens you want, but an all-arounder is the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO (its weather sealed too). This gives you a "full frame equivalent" of 25-82mm)

Personally I have a Full-Frame Sony A7C with a Tamron 28-75mm mk.2. I use it for /out/ as well as artistic shit, macro, wildlife, and other stuff.

Tthe thing is, if you want to take good photos, you need a good DSLR and expensive glass. Which are heavy. You also have to take the time to take your shots. Don't expect to just wander into the perfect photo during a hike. You might find a beautiful vista, but you'll have to wait 3 hours for the light to be correct, and you still have many miles to walk before you get to your camp.

So IMHO, you either dedicate a trip to photos or you can just use your smart phone to document your trip.

I got the mk.3 recently, I'm loving it so far. Phone cameras are nice but I like being able to turn my phone off and stow it in my bag, zero temptation to check social media and conserves battery. Having all of the controls available and learning more about photography is also very fun. I'm going to flip the kit lens soon and get a dedicated macro and landscape lens.

Depends; do you want a camera because you like photography or do you want a camera to just take some snapshits as you hike?

You need to either prioritize or be ready to fork out the price of a used car. If you want something that's small, waterproof, bomb-proof and otherwise "decent" then the offerings in that field from Pentax and Olympus are good. If you're not planning on shooting rapids with your camera and want something that's high-quality, light and won't get killed by rain and are willing to fork out a couple thousand dollary-doos for than an Olympus OM-1 is a good bet. If you want to wear your camera then just use a GoPro.

I dont even worry about durability or water whatever. just get a water resistant bag.
what I do and what you should do if you're not hella pro is to just get a whole sub $100 camera.
I carry a d3200 i got for $32 and a $60 18-135 lens. if i fuck it up who cares lol. it's durable enough to set down on some rocks to get a free hand or roll on the ground some, obviously if you need to throw your gear or drop it, its fucked, but a good bag will solve that in some cases

addition to post above: I use a Nikon D3500 and some prime lenses from the 70s-80s. No autofocus. Camera body alone was $200 a few years ago. It's an APS-c sensor so to get ideal near-eyeball FOV i like to use a 28mm Nikkor. Also use a 35-200mm Nikkor macro lens for taking extreme close ups or telephoto. Would definitely take only the pancake lens if hiking any distance.

I have used the """pro""" mode on my old ass samsung galaxy since forever and it works quiet well. Even night sky shots with a 10s exposure look neat. Just needs a stable platform.

Any DSLR wit a screen on top is weather sealed to a degree. If portability is a must Olympus em1 variations are the best you can get.

Whatever you do make sure you look for the lenses you need first, because switching systems after investing in them is a bitch.
