Why am I so bad at this? I always end up just chipping the sticks apart all over the ground like a retard. I get shavings off but they're inconsistent and smaller than I would like. Is my knife not sharp enough? Wrong kind of wood? Bad technique?

I also find my scandi or micro bevelled scandis peel that wood away easier than my flat grinds. I don't have much success with my convex, but understand convexbros have no issues.

If you can’t peel a zucchini like that, your knife isn’t anywhere near sharp enough. It should be the default for a halfway sharp knife.

Your issue is 50% blade, 50% technique.
I can pull feathers like the with a butter knife.
You should be trying to scrape, not fillet.

yeah of course it's a pretty simple thermodynamic concept, the real answer though is it's probably one of the worst ways to start a fire since you practically need char cloth and at that point a flint and steel or striker is a lot easier
