Normally when I explore creeks and lakes I just go in with flipflops or barefoot, but now I want to explore a few wetlands near me but it'll different due to the deeper mud. Should I invest in waders or is it a waste of money?

In a general sense, wadders are more for fishing or doing some kind of outdoor work in the mukadigook. As far as playing in the mud... I dont know man, it's hard to say without knowing exactly where you are going to be. You going full retard and jumping into quicksand like conditions or are you afraid of little snakes swimming up your butthole? More information is required.

But leep in mind, that the wadders in your pic can be death sentances in certain conditions, if you fall into deeper water and they fill with water and you start to sink, you will drown before you manage to get them off.

I just don't want to sink ass deep into mud and get my shit all fucked up. I'm mostly used to places with solid footing such as rocky creeks.
I want to explore stuff like tidal wetlands near the beach but I don't know how deep the mud is there.

if you don't know the depth of something don't go walking around it in waders holy fucking lmao. they're meant for fishing and stuff like that where you stand in 1 place. not for exploring. do you have a brain? they're non-breathable rubber over-alls and if liquid gets over the top of them you're fucked.
what you want is probably a wet suit and better footwear than flip flops (sandals that actually strap to your heel, water shoes, crocs, etc depends on the conditions)

if you're too brain dead and need to be hand held, look at the kind of gear that dry cavers and the kind of gear recreational divers bring. what you want is probably somewhere in the middle of that. shoe type will be extremely dependent on what you're going through and you'll probably need multiple types of shoes.

They fill up with air and raise your feet up, the weight distribution becomes such that your chest sinks and your legs are above water. That's why if you are wearing them and fall on deep water you are supposed to curl up in a ball to keep the floating wader as close to your upper body as possible, then you paddle yourself back to the boat

a wet suit is a pretty good idea, you can even get half suits that are seperate pants and ditch the top if you arent really swimming. Get some wetsuit boots, pants, gloves, have fun in questionablly deep water and mud.

I borrowed a buddy’s rubberized old style waders a couple of years back while fishing (the river banks were too steep for standing on the shore) and found that you’ll want to wear breathable polar fleece pants, as you can easily get sweaty and you’ll need a belt around the outside waist, or they’re foo floppy (and if you fall, they’ll immediately fill with water and drown you). Also, my buddy wears size 10 shoes and while I’m a 9.5 I had to cram a pair of slip-on shoes down in the boot, as they were way too loose.

I’d get a pair of the modern style light weight fabric waders with footies and separate wading boots.
