the one about 5 miles from my place is great, as it creates the lake in pic related (not the best shot of it, had just pushed off, was getting ready for some fishing). but in general providing flood control, recreation, clean power generation is more than worth it.
shame about the fish, but there must be some solution that lets them get around dams (fish ladders, tubes etc). but bear in mind, they may harm fish to some degree, but they provide habitat for other things, like water birds.
