I saw this little fucker on the path in front of me while hiking to my fishing spot and it scared the living shit out of me cause I thought it was a rattle snake at first glance

Is it normal to feel a fight or flight response to certain animals upon unexpectedly seeing them?

I don’t know, but it makes me sad. Not too long ago my mom called and was freaking out about this huge snake she found right up next to the porch, complete with narrative of hero dad killing it and saving the day. I came over to examine the corpse. It was a really beautiful corn snake. I tried explaining how they just killed a very HELPFUL and HARMLESS snake, but all I got was, “I don’t care! Snakes are scary and I don’t want them on my porch!”

I found a North American Racer in southern Idaho today. Since I didn't know what it was, I didn't mess with it.

Also in Idaho, I've run into a lot of racers over the past month. The last one go spooked by my dogs, but they know to leave snakes along. When I walked up to him he kept threatening to strike, trying to convince my he was poisonous. But when I leaned down closer to him, he would lose his nerve and hide his head under his coils. They're such cute little guys.

You see a lot of racers around here, but they don't usually stick around. Normally they flee when they see you, and they are really fast, fastest snake by far you'll see in this state.
