I want to buy something that will recharge my phone. possibly even GPS when im /out/

and ive been looking at the solarmonkey adventurer. would this be good?

also any other recommendations for rechargers would be great

I got that very model, used it on a 3 weeks trip trough Iceland this summer to keep my mobile phone and mp3 Player. It did work well, loads up comparatively fast and the internal battery has enough power to charge my phone twice.
Check how many mAh your battery packs need and how much the internal battery of the solar charger has. calculate a loss of 30% for transfer and you should be alright.

I guaranty I've hiked more miles and bagged more peaks than you have. I've done three separate month long expeditions, one of them solo.

What the fuck is wrong with car camping? Do *only* go out to do Mountain Dew commercial extreme shit? You've never decided on a Friday, hey fuck it, let's go camping? Thrown your shot in the car and gone. Maybe take a willing female and a cooler with some choice grub you cook on an open fire? These are enjoyable things and if you're avoiding them because they aren't "hardcore" enough for you than you're missing out. So please explain to me what's so bad about car camping. Are you bear grylls?

One thing about it though, if you're counting ounces, it's actually lighter to take about 3-4 days worth of batteries. I only take the solar if I'm going to be out more than 3 nights, because only then does the weight justify bringing it.

Sometimes I will bring the guide 10 but not the solar panel itself, because with that and some AA batteries you can charge up your phone, and I also use a BD revolt headlamp which recharges off usb as well.

So yeah, solar panels are great, but still to heavy for weekend warrioring.

I use a light weight radio/flashlight that has both solar power and a turn crank. Mine has a USB port on it. 1lb, has solar and the crank, plus weather band radio.... pretty low cost but in my case exceptionally reliable.
