Going to buy a portable grill (coal) today.

Does it need some wind protection?

Pic related doesn't have anything against the wind.

Went for this type finally. Feels more stable and functional. I'm not going to carry it too far anyway.

Guess I can just close the lid if it's too windy and open the wind holes on the side?

Wind holes? Those are vents, them being open is necessary for the coals to burn. You can control the burn rate, and thus temperature by throttling the position of these holes. If you're grilling burgers or something else that doesn't take too long, just leave them full open.

That's what I meant I think. If I'm in a windy place, I guess I can put the lid on but leave the vents open.

In a non-windy place I wouldn't use the lid.

Been using one of these for decades, though I swapped out the diffuser plate for a lower grate and added lava rocks.

Yes, but when I touched it in the store I didn't like the construction. Pretty unstable for example. And since I don't need to carry it super far, I took something heavier but in my opinion more functional

Fire needs oxygen, but you need to control how much air can get in or risk making the fire to hot and worthless for most cooking.

I bought this and haven't used it yet. Is it basically useless? It weighs maybe 3-4 lbs and folds up very thinly. I mainly bring it as a fire backup or sometimes a 3rd backup in case something happens to my butane grill.
