So is there any truth to medicinal plants that isn't just hippy folk crap like eat dandelions to cure the common cold?

The closest I know is pine tree.needle tea to cure scurvy, and supposedly some tree barks have aspirin like compounds for pain relief.

"medicine" doesn't even "cure" a cold, you need the vitamins in your body that help your body fight the cold like vitamin C, D, and zinc. you also want a real vitamin C complex, ideally from food, not man made ascorbic acid
in many cases medicines are literally billion dollar scams
for example, you can literally cure type 2 diabetes by fasting/ not consoooming sugar and processed carbs, or you can keep injecting insulin and get dozens of more complications from having high levels of insulin in the long run
around 70%+ of chronic diseases are probably from eating processed foods, kids get fatty liver now because of their increased sugar intake in the form of juice, cereal, and other bullshit that isn't real food
the medical industry is only here to make money after the food industry makes you sick

Most modern medicine is derived from compounds found in nature. Even the medicines that are synthesized in a lab are almost always made to mimic naturally occurring compounds with a few minor tweaks. Herbal medicine is mostly obsolete at this point. Can it work? For some things, absolutely! But here's the reason it should generally be reserved for emergency survival situations:

Lots of plants have varying levels of medicinal effect. Ironroot/feverroot can help bring down a fever. Sassafras used to be used for lung health, contains safrole though which is pretty toxic at a higher level. Meadowsweet is the catch all tonic. The only thing it's actually been 'proven ' to do is act as an anti inflammatory. But given the number of illnesses that elicit an inflammatory response it makes sense that it would be considered so widely useful for so many sicknesses.

Feverfew is still used for lots of illnesses. It's in the chrysanthemum family. Some of the extractives are proven helpful for migraines and a variety of other sicknesses. Used to be called medieval aspirin. Sometimes they'd give it to birthing women for the pain, but if I remember right that can cause blood thinning problems just like nsaids. Fine in a hospital setting, but women were dying enough back then even without that problem.

Misspent moreover. Even today we still use herbal remedies. We just don't think of them that way. Coffee for a hangover, green tea to cut a greasy meal, strong ginger ale for an upset stomach or nausea. Plenty of herbal remedies still work fine. We usually just relegate them to backline duty.

well, any plant that has Vitamin C can help against scurvy afaik. Conmon yarrow helps stopping bleeding if you get injured on a teio. crushing the leaves and mix with fat and place on the wound. Supposedly a tea made from yarrow can help with kidney stones but I do not know for certain so I would not rely on it.
