I live near the Rhine river in Germany and went on it with my kayak, near where i live.
Sunny day, little wind. So I'm paddling the Ruhr up, maybe a km and pull out my phone to take a picture of some shit. I put the phone between my legs and fumble to get a snack out of my PFD vest.
So my kayak slowly turns parallel to the waves and a random larger wave pushed me. I was distracted, lost balance and fell into the soup. Never happened before or since.
As my head is over the water again i remember my phone and see it's lit screen gliding into the eternal darkness, getting dimmer and dimmer.
I tried to grab it, but it was too far gone.
Luckily i didn't loose my glasses or my keys as well.
Lesson learned: if this happens in bumfuck nowhere you might be boned. A simple printout of the map and a small compass is a good idea.
