Did this gamble with my friend and got good quality machetes. Two were proper thick. About 6$ each.

in my experience, due to the amount of abuse machetes take, all harder steel does is crack. my favorite machetes have been quite soft. pic related. top is a more expensive and harder machete that lasted me only a few weeks vs a cheap soft imacasa one that has cleared multiple acres of land and is nearly a decade old at this point.

machetes are balanced near the tip for chopping and slashing. swords are balanced near the handle for maneuverability and would suck at those tasks. machetes are also much thinner because they are not made for stabbing making them cut through brush easier.

People who actually need machetes to get around have to be able to clear wide swathes of land at a time and if you're doing that with a a heavy tool you swing with both arms you'll tire out after 5 minutes. When you're in dense jungle you won't have the room for real swing anyways.

This is why lots of people cut their machetes even shorter than they already are, and when you cut use short cleaves letting gravity do most of the work like you're using a cleaver.

I have this SOGfari I got on sale at Walmart. Works pretty well. Yeah, I clean and sharpen it like my kitchen knives. Strange thing is when I went to look up how much they cost on SOGs website, the SOGfari they have is completely different. The tanto tip like mine only has a 10" blade while their longer one is an 18" blade with the typical curved belly tip.
