I heard that if you filter water from a pool you should boil it to kill viruses but if it's from a running source like a river you can just filter it and there won't be any viruses. Why is that? Is it even true?

As long as you are filtering using an actual filter like a Sawyer and not some weird bandana+sand setup, then you don't need to boil the water. I'd still recommend getting water from a flowing source, the faster the better, and avoiding stagnant water. If you HAVE to use stagnant water, boil it as well as filter it. I HATE CAPTCHA

Have copper bucket.
Fill copper bucket with water.
Leave copper bucket filled with water alone for a day.

My plan is to use a Sawyer squeeze in the summer and in the winter a Millbank bag and boiling so I don't have to deal with freezing filters. I'm in the UK and I think viruses in water are pretty rare here but since microfilters like the squeeze don't catch them I'm not sure what the risk of them is from different water sources. You reckon if the filter is catching all the bigger microbes I'll be fine?

Totally depends on the type of filter you use. If it can't filter out viruses, then you should definitely boil it.

Honestly I've drank from bores, wells, creeks, rivers and the odd dam in my life, 46yr old now, and never gotten sick. Located in sth eastern Australia if that makes any difference idk
