I'm good friends who run my local dive club who I would do it through in the UK so it's sort of like taking money out their pocket and it means by the time I get to Cabo at the end of the year I can actually do some dives without learning but yeah the diving is so so grim here in the UK I might say fuck it and just wait

I dont dive but I greatly enjoy cave diving disaster stories.
What gets me is that theres so little payoff for the risk involved. Like you'd think going deep into some untouched prehistoric cave would let you find some fossils or ancient artifacts. But no, a few of them have crystals and maybe you'll make dough salvage diving, but natural caves are just fucking empty deathtraps 90% of the time.

do you guys think it would be worth buying some simple scuba shit for very occasional freshwater use? I'm thinking of the times I've dropped things in deep water and will never see them again. It would be nice to be able to retrieve stuff without drowning.

Just recently got a hair up my ass and impulsively signed up for a PADI course in a few months. Realized I should prob brush up on my swimming skills.
Any advice on training for the swim test? Is it difficult, or is it the kind of thing a decently athletic person can pull off with a bit of practice? Am I just a retard doomed to perish in the deeps? I used to pass the swim tests in the Navy and Army a decade ago , and I'm fairly fit, but I havent been swimming in years

Its easy as fuck. like 4 laps in the pool, no time limit and you can use any style/s you want.

Diving isn't swimming, best divers out there are calm, collected, and barely exert themselves.

Koh Tao is the obvious choice. The diving isn't amazing (it's fairly average for SE Asia) but there are a huge number of dive schools and the competition is great for price and professionalism. I loved the atmosphere on the island too.

For shorter dives it’s not an issue, but for longer ones I bring a lifestraw. That way I can just put it in my mouth and suck in to get a drink of water.

I have the opposite experience, I got certified by the french federation (FFESSM N3, not PADI) and find the PADI AOW divers I have met in North America were all god awful with buyancy, air consumption and behavior.
One of the guys I dove with did an uncontrolled rapid ascent in very murky water. I surfaced since we had lost each other, and the fucker had swam back to shore, leaving me looking for him wondering if he had had an accident for 10min before someone called me from the beach to tell me he was there

A matter a fact it's one of many masks and BC's they use also I think the marine divers do too.
That being said I scared a toddler coming up the beach from a dive absolutely covered in seaweed and seagrass, must of looked like the swamp thing. Parent's were understanding as hilarious as that sounds.

Yes, like you don't have to be an excellent swimmer but you need to be able to be 100% comfortable in the water, and that means being able to hold your own, swim on the surface and basically not drown.

From what ive heard GUE is a cult and very expensive. Also its less of training and more of a test.

GUE doesn't really seem more expensive than other tech training, and the cult thing depends on where you are I think. Here in northern Europe, they're pretty laid back.
They do seem resistant to change though, which gives me the impression that they won't exactly be cutting edge with the newest progress in knowledge and technology.

My bf is TDI full trimix though. I guess perhaps it would be more convenient if we've been taught the same standards.

Yeah, theyre referred to as a cult because they are very rigid in training and gear. There are plenty of gue divers that are lax though, theyre not all crazy.

It definitely helps if you're the same training, you can try different instructors though. I'm tdi full cave.

That's cool. Cave stuff is still a couple of years out in the future for me. Same with CCR. I do want to get into cave/mine diving with a JJ at some point, but the finances need to keep up.

For TDI, I've been recommended doing Advanced Nitrox and Helitrox combined, although I thought AN was usually combined with Deco Procedures. I guess I should ask a potential TDI instructor what makes the most sense to do.

Not sure, but you should get deco since its a problem you will keep running into. I still need to get the deco cert, I have it from some re breather certs but some people are sticklers about the rules.

What would be the difference between TDI and GUE cave? It seems like GUE has less courses, but each course is longer and requires more. I’m also doing my GUE fundies this fall

GUE is great as far as knowledge goes but they are culty as fuck. They are the kind of people to tell you everything you've done in the past is wrong and this is only right way to dive and not die.
I called them actually yesterday because I need to get training on re-breather and overhead diving. When I told them I use an Aqua Lung military BCD that I need to throw it out because Aqua lung is trash.
I mean look there comes to a point when it comes minimizing risk you get depreciating returns.

From what I know (havent done gue), GUE is more of an exam and if you cant preform you have to repeat. TDI is more of training and the idea is you may not be perfect right out of the class but you have the tools to gain experience. That said my cave course was very fucking hard and i'm glad for it every time I see shitty ass cave divers out there.
