Are baitcasters any good for saltwater fishing on piers / docks ? It seems like the reel setup would be more comfortable for fishing over railings and if you are bottom fishing you probably at least have an ounce weight on it. But in practice I always see the opposite lots of spinning tackle.

Landed 3 Black and Yellow Rockfish, and 1 Blue Rockfish, All on a weedless Texas rig with a 1oz sinker, bead, and 4-0 hook. The 3 B&Y were all caught on the same swimbait and the blue on a 5" Berkley Gulp Grub. All Fish were safely released.

Hey guys, can you help out a newbie? Just started fishing yesterday. I picked out a couple of spinners and went to the lake and already lost one. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. My setup is:
15 lb braided main line>2 split shot weights>barrel swivel>2 or 3' 4 lb fluorocarbon leader>spinner
The youtube vids I watched said this is how to do it (I think) but I lost my spinner by dragging it on the lake bed? In retrospect this seems incredibly obvious, that spinner is going to slowly sink. Should I put a bobber on the line or am I just not reeling in fast enough?

No need to add weight to a spinner unless it’s too light for your rod to cast effectively. Just reel it in slightly faster if you start to feel the bottom.

If I snag up, the first thing I do is give the line a gentlish bounce with the rod to see if it'll pop out with a bit of slack. If that doesn't work, I try to get a different angle and pop it out that way. If you're stuck on a rock, you can almost always get unstuck by pulling from a different direction or exactly the opposite direction.

Worst case, you've snagged someone else's line, a big log, or a firmly rooted aquatic plant, and your hook has set into it, and you basically have to either overcome the weight to pull it gently out, overcome the root system of the weed, or reach the snag with a canoe paddle or something so you can push your hook back out.

Sometimes there's nothing you can do but to snap your line because you can't recover the snag. Do your best to snap the line at the lure or leader instead of at your rod tip, because the less line you leave in the water, the less you make the spot more likely to snag you or others later.

If nothing else works you can unhook your reel from your rod and push the rod down the line into the water to the lure. I have retrieved many lures doing this. It's a bit of a pain in the ass, but not as much as losing a lure. Guess I should include a pic. Here's a screenshot of what I assume is a hybrid redear sunfish and green sunfish. Really amazing coloration that didn't really come through in the video.

You'll just lose some stuff, especially in the beginning. If I buy spinnier I buy them in bulk. What kind of fish are you trying to catch and what size spinner are you using? Maybe using bait(or having one rod with bait and one with lure) is better in the beginning? Generally I think you'll catch more with bait and it will be less frustrating if you are a newb.
If you are using an artificial lure you generally should know where the fish are, if you are throwing somewhere where there is none obviously you can't trick them into biting. WIth bait like worms/cheese/powerbait they might come on their own from the scent.

1. Don't get too hung up on color. In my experience you just need a few in general categories for your target fish. For me it's some kind of silvery bait fish, something reddish and something dark for murky water and low light.

2. I usually tie an fg knot regardless since it's a better leader knot, even then I try not to cast it through the guides. 50cm is probably enough leader, I would personally go a little longer though, but that depends on the length of your rod too.

Lost a MONSTER brown trout because he was too heavy for me to boat flip him onto the rock I was casting from and he shook loose while I was trying to climb down to get him. Seriously a hawg of a hook nosed fish eater. Kept my 1 over 14 inch trout for lunch, a 19 inch Rainbow. Still can’t upload any pictures.

How do you guys like to carry your tackle when bank fishing? I have a rod shoulder bag that does the job, but it’s not the most comfortable. Should I get one of those fancy backpacks that is meant to fit tackle trays, or just throw it in a cheapo backpack?

I have a 30 bucks adidas backpack that fits both the large and smaller tacklebox, I find having the big one in the backpack a bit uncomfortable so I usually dont take it with me unless I go far away. If the grass aint wet I do throw my bag into the grass the moment I arrive at the spot

I use the head bag/daypack off of my Deuter hiking pack and toss a couple of Plano 4800s in there with a worm tub, a roach clip for dehooking, a multi tool, and my CCW. I clip my water bottle and my 4 piece rod roll to the loops on the side and I’m all set to climb rocks or hike or bike to where I want to fish.

I rock a $30 amazon pair for surf fishing. I've had this pair for a year. Use em at least 2-3 times a week, rarely rinse them, and they still haven't leaked. The boots are thin and uncomfortable, but they're just fine if you add an insole. Totally worth the $30.

It literally does not matter what the raiting says as long as your lineroller (if you use spinning gear) can handle the diameter and you use drag correctly. Thin line just casts and manages better so you should always use as thin as you can get away with.

But the rating is usually for mono, braid is always stronger at the same diameter.

Pond and creek fishing is the only enjoyable summer fishing. Large bodies of water require fishing deep to get any real big fish due to the water temps. At least they have nowhere to go in ponds and streams. Deep fishing with a depth finder is just boring to me. I like sight fishing in clear shallow water.

I presume you’re talking about big head and silver carp? They don’t scare away other fish, but they are ram suspension filter feeders, so they compete with small fish for food (and with paddlefish) and they breed much faster than paddlefish.

This makes them pretty hard to target with conventional tackle, so you can either use micro-rigs and hope they don’t bend the little hook or pop the line, or you can use snagging rigs (or bow fishing gear). They jump at the sound of boats, so some people have suggested using nets or sheets mounted to the boat above water the way that Polynesians catch flying fish, and just driving around until you’ve caught a bunch, but I don’t know if anyones actually done this instead of just talking about it.

I’ve bow fished for them in Iowa, the flesh is tasty, but they have a lot of y-bones, so they’re difficult to clean if you want conventional filets. They are best served as fish balls (think crabcake) or by smoking them whole and serving them to be picked at with crackers and a cheese ball.

I went out saturday and caught a redtail on a metal jig while fishing for striper. other folks got 5+ 15"+ bsp and redtails on bait during the slack tide. Ebb and flood were slow.

I wouldn't want perch to be part of my diet at all. I hate the texture. Absolute mush even if you bleed and ice them the second they leave the water. I've tried bsp, rubberlip (best one imo), and redtail. All shit.

It looks cool. Supposedly it helps to not have the rear portion bump your arm making short accurate casts. It does cast like a 7' rod despite being a 7'8" big bait rod with a long grip. Its mostly Yuki Ito autism though. They are Megabass slant bridge rods. That one is the Super Destruction swimbait rod with a telescopic blank and spiral wrapped guides. I throw 1-4 oz baits on it mostly.

so I've never really used pic rel except for one time harassing dinks. bought it a while ago to throw in my ultralight box. decided to try it out at the pond today and I could not stop catching crappie to save my life. not small ones either. I must have caught 10 decent sized ones and a big fat bluegill. this thing is an absolute beast for shallow water crappie. only downside is you lose a lot of fish because the treble is so damn small, but they just can't resist it. this has just been put at the top of my list for crappie lures, and it's like $1.50 at Walmart lol.

I took that pic after getting home. Right before I left I got it snagged in a tree and went for a lil swim to get it. It's a cheap lure, but I don't like leaving line or lures in trees or in the water if I can help it. Had to cut the line to free it from the branch and quickly retied a non-fishing knot just so I didn't lose it.

I mean it depends I would say if you were just starting and got like a 60$ black max combo and a roughly 30-45$ year license and then like 50$ worth of tackle you could easily fish trout all year long using bread as bait and catching anything from trout bullheads bluegills and the occasional big carp off of roughly 200$ for the whole year and it just gets cheaper as time goes on cause you already have a rod and aome gear for the next year but you can easily drop thousands into fishing

Unless you throw heavier lures(+10g) don't bother. For soaking bait they are useless, as the reel is on top and will turn upside down if you put it down and out of your hands.

I do walk a ways down the beach to but tourists still insist on walking 10 feet behind me. If they get a hook in the head thats their problem. I normally fish a lot later at night but the high tide was at 8:15 and it was a full moon so I wanted to go out. Go back to Jersey or Jew York if you like having your eye in its socket.

Are you talking spey casting or one hand? I do a lot of swinging streamers with a one hand and two hand rod for striper and its very similar to how you might fish for steelhead or salmon.
There are three basic approaches to swinging a streamer. 1) Dead drift. Cast out upstream then throw mends to keep the fly drifting free of drag. You can get tons of takes this way when the fish are not in feed mode but will eat a fly if it is in their face. 2) Down stream swing. The most obvious way. Cast at a 45 degree angle down stream and allow the fly to swing in the current and it will end up directly down stream of you at the end of the swing. Let it dangle as you can get takes on the dangle a lot of the time. If I'm using a 1 hand rod I will some times retrieve the fly from the dangle or take some line and then let it drift back down as that can be effective as well. Take two steps down stream and repeat.
3) Greased line swing. Basically putting 1 and 2 together. Cast across stream or slightly upstream and mend the fly as it drifts. This will let the fly get some depth. As the line starts to come taunt it will cause the fly to rise rapidly like a fish caught in the current.
If you are fishing a two hand rod you can play around with different poly leaders or mow tips depending on depth and current. For the tidal rivers I fish I don't use anything other than a 5 foot extra fast sink poly leader because the rivers are shallow and the striper are looking up most of the time. With a one hand rod you can weight the fly or use a sink tip line if you need more depth. Mending allows the fly to sink so if you need more depth on the swing cause up stream and mend a bunch before the swing.

Alternatively, you can use spinners but you gonna reel them fast to keep them just under the surface. if it's rock bottom, anything that touches the bottom is gonna get instantly stuck.

Hoosier here. I fucking love creek fishing. This, but go for it if you're feeling adventurous. I tried something similar to pic related in Japan. The part I ate was the outside swimming bit, like the big transparent flappy part that looks like an old lady's shower cap teppanyaki'd on hot coals. It tasted the same as a new car tire smells and had the same cursed-carrot consistently of sea cucumber. Give it a go and report back

Not really, but it makes certain things better. Fluoro and Mono are more resistant to being snipped by a toothy fish than braid, or by sharp rocks, so a fluoro leader helps reduce that. Some highly pressured fish will see the braid more than others too.

I fished for years direct tying to braid instead of using leaders, and I caught a lot of fish, but now I use a leader on every setup, and I think I lose noticeably fewer lures and catch slightly more fish than before.

Went kayak fishing at la jolla yesterday. Bass bite was OK, but I hooked something huge that came off the hook after almost a half hour of the thing towing me through the kelp. It was pulling drag on my 40lb setup like nothing. Might have been a big yellowtail, but the runs didn't really feel like one. I think it was either a black or white sea bass at least 40lbs. Don't think it was a shark because my leader wasn't nicked at all. I hooked another something big that was pulling me in the same area, but rhat one came off in like 2 minutes. The kelp can be a bitch.

My uncle always uses a wacky rig when we go fishing. I refuse to use it because it's boring and like cheating. Obviously, he catches tons of 2lb bass and it makes him look like a pro bassmaster, but I'm not after dinks. It's literally the fucking easymode bass method, but I've only ever seen him catch one large bass on it. He's probably killed hundreds of bass in his lifetime by guthook wacky rigs. I catch a lot of channel cats with plain hotdogs. I've tried soaking them in garlic and kool aid but didn't notice much difference. They love them either way, so do turtles.

one other thing I'll say is never waste your money on magicbait from walmart, it smells like actual shit and out of 4 bags I didn't get so much as a nibble.

The koolaid thing is a total BS catfish aren't attracted by sugar, its just a waste and makes a mess. Jello is legit though as it contains collagen which is an animal protein. I would just put plain meat out there, works just as good.

I started with this exact same setup with no luck. Same split shot before the swivel and everything. For this technique you do want to just reel it in a little faster.

What I did and what I would recommend is starting with a Carolina rig with some floating bait. It's what allowed me to start catching consistently, grow confident, and now I am exploring more advanced techniques like using spinners.

Picrelated. I'd recommend Powerboat. I like the floating eggs, and the floating fake worms. Good luck anon I love fishing and being successful for the first few times was a really awesome experience.

Funny enough the very first fish I ever caught was on a nonsense setup I'd contrived out of the same exact desperation you describe. I hooked a bobber on top of a spoon with a worm on it lmao.

I lost a few nice lures when I was still using the clinch knot. They didn't seem to hold on the thicker ring of the lure. I'd sometimes use a swivel, but it made the presentation worse. I only really use the improve clinch knot now. It's my favorite knot.
