My state says you need to have a life jacket if you're canoeing, but gives little guidance as to what the requirements of the life jacket are - they just link to https://safeboatingcampaign.com/life-jackets/ for more information. Does anyone know if something like pic related fulfills the requirement of having a PFD on you? It's $20 and has a tube for you to inflate manually. Other "real" life jackets I see are at least double the price. I've been going without one all year but have recently started canoeing in a bay that has harbor patrol boats, I don't want them coming over and giving me shit for not having one. I'm a very strong swimmer, I don't worry about drowning unless I get hit by a boat or something.
