I had pic related but it got beat to shit in a storm. Since I now know I will want to do a lot of this backpacking stuff, which tent should I get to replace it?
It is just me going. I am 5'10" and skinny. Back and side sleeper. Go /out/ in all sorts of places like mountains around Salt Lake, Zion, Grand Canyon, Guadalupe, Big Bend NP, etc. Go in 3 seasons 4 if going in the south.

The Durston tents are very good, probably the best value in a trekking pole tent. I had a 2P and it was well made and comfy.
I have a buddy with a Seek Outside Silex made from Dyneema. Same weight as the Durston 1P but a bit larger footprint and a good bit larger nest.
Right now I use a Tarptent Pen Li which is the best 1 person tent I have ever had. I take it when I go for long hard hikes and I want to minimize weight.

When I am not so weight conscious I take a Kuiu Mountain Star. Bigger, handles more wind and snow, less flapping in the wind.

If I was starting over I would go with whatever Tarptent was in my budget and met my size and weight needs, and wasn't a trekking pole tent. For me that'd be their Double Rainbow Li.

Interested in your thoughts on a few of these tents. Specifically, I am 6'5" and use a thick pad. I cannot safely guess which tents have the usable space I can fit in without compressing my thicker sleeping bags on the walls. The Silex and mountain star both came up but the dimensions make it hard to tell. Any guesses on me fitting?

Most of the ones I have slept in none were all that good for my height, including the Silex. I fit, but the walls were pretty close of my face and/or my feet. The exception is the Tarptent Aeon Li. It is supposedly made for people up to 7' but I can attest that it is very comfortable at my height and none of me touches the walls.

You'd be fine in the Mountain Star as well if you stretched out in the center.

I would recommend a hammock tent with a tarp you pitch above to help with future storms. There are tons of great ones just get one with 5 stars

I would not.
Hammocks are fine for a few setups but if you camp in the desert or above the treeline they suck. They also suck in high winds since they sway, and the tarp can never be secured in a way that keeps it from flapping all the hell all over the place and maybe blowing away if it gets bad enough.

Recs for durable, storm-resistant tents? I've been caught in enough storms with flimsy tents to care to do it again. I need something that can stand sustained winds and continuous, heavy downpours.

Most any of Hilleberg's tents are solidly storm worthy.
I spent 3 days on Afognak island in a Kifaru Sawtooth and 2 of them had sustained 50+ MPH wind. It was brutal but the tent held up just fine.

In the few years that I ran a MeetUp group I saw a lot of tents. It really is a get-what-you-pay-for situation. Like, any $300 tent is just as well built as any other $300 tent. I don’t think you’d buy something that’s top shelf and regret it. Quality is remember after cost is forgotten (Boomer wisdom). The diminishing returns don’t start until you get over like $400. Sometimes you’ll find one a little cheaper (X-Mid) or one that’s super unique (Yama Ciriform).

I use an Rei Half-Dome 2 but I picked it up years ago super cheap at one of those used gear sales they have. I think I paid 40 bucks for it and it's lasted me for 10 years or so. Best? No, I know it's not I'm sure, but it's something to sleep in and keeps the bugs out and the rain off.
