The Garmin watches are very functional, but even the solar ones discharge faster than they can charge via sunlight. The tough solar Casio watches will go forever, but you're not getting the functionality you would out of the Garmin watches as far as maps and shit. Non smartwatch watches need calibrations for altitude, declination angles, temp, and shit like that. If you don't have it dialed in it'll be worthless. The most I've ever used a survival watch for was the compass, and that was only to make sure I was heading the right direction. And again if it didn't have the declination angle set, I would have been off course. With a basic analog watch you can determine direction of travel. I've never used temp, altimeter, or barometer on my Casio watches.
