Okay /out/, I want to see what everyone thinks of bear canisters or vaults. The faggots at ATC are starting to push that more hikers use them.

I use Ursacks or the knockoffs and PCT hang my food.

They were pushing bear vaults when I did a section hike in 2014. Still, the issue is people not following established guidelines. Bears get into peoples food because it was out in the open. Hanging absolutely works most of the time. The people who didn’t hang their food probably won’t bother with canisters either. There’s also a recent picture of an Ursaq that’s being ripped open by a bear.

Locally I'm glad people are getting asked to use them. Lots of hikers seem to only come prepared for PCT hang even though the branches on all the trees here are too high and you really need a can or ursak. It leads to the bears being way too socialized and bold.

The thing that is bad is that people make bears into horrible monsters of doom and death. Yet, as you said, they are overgrown raccoons that learn to stick around campsites or shelters due to people not cleaning up.

The only problem I have with bear canisters is that I'm 99% sure the certifications are crony bullshit to inflate the prices. Yes, bears are fucking strong. But we should be able to get one from China for $15, or go on YT and learn how to make one. I'm not paying $100 for a fucking plastic can.

Although, even some of the most religious hangers will end up sleeping with their food bag by the halfway point of a long trail like the AT. You see it with the YouTube thru-hikers, and they pass their bad habits along to first time backpackers.
The ursacks get torn into every year it seems.
