No hammock thread?

Post your recent /out/ings and your setup. Pic related is camping in the Appalachians. Decided to risk it with no tarp and paid the price with some rain in night, but tree cover + mosquito net kept me mostly dry and mummy bag kept me warm.

Is there a better feeling than finding the perfect spaced trees at an ideal campin spot?

I slept in a hammock for the first time last weekend. In the middle of the night I tried to roll over, slipped a bit and ripped a massive hole in my bug net. I also realized the cheap hammocks are made for 5 foot tall Chinese guys. It was still very nice seeing the sky and being able to pop my head up and look around if I heard something loud walking around. Do you all sleep on your backs at home? I usually can't fall asleep unless I'm on my side. I didn't sleep for more than 1-1.5 hours at a time.

In the morning I had some crows fly directly above me and then swoop down about 3 feet away. I was expecting them to peck me but I guess they were just curious. All in all I liked the experience.

How do you pick good spots ? I'm always a bit apprehensive about sleeping directly under big branches.

Normally I look for thin branches with lots of leaves just in case a storm comes. That way you get lots of cover and if it's bad enough, you won't need to worry about branches falling and injuring you.

I sleep on my side at home (can’t sleep on my back at all in a bed) but in the hammock I’m sort of in between, kind of on my side but also on my back. Always try playing with your setup. I like my foot end to be ridiculously higher than my head; like a foot higher.

Of all the gear choices someone can make that seem to have a strict love/hate dichotomy, (boots vs trail runners, various stove options, paper maps vs phone or gps, etc.), nothing will change your experience more than switching to a hammock.

Just last weekend I was on a quick overnight despite the heat, and it started raining around 4pm. Laying back in a hammock and watching the rain fall is super kino.

Ended up getting the Warbonnet Eldorado. Same price as the Hennessey and is supposed to be a lot more comfortable than the Hennessey. Rain fly has to be bought separate but I'm going to get a cheaper and bigger one than the Hennessey has. I plan on buying one of Warbonnets underquilts in the fall. Might need to get a top quilt as well

3 or 4 years ago Warbonnet started making tarps with built in beaks. It’s a middle ground between the open sides of regular hex tarps and tarps with full doors.

Yeah those look nice but they are quite expensive. I think that the mountain fly is a good middle ground for a 4 season setup, that I'd be able to use in snow. Are any accessories included? Guylines, hooks, spikes or stakes? It doesn't look like it considering there are a bunch of frequently bought items on top of the cost of the tarp.

The most important thing is size. 11’ x ~58” is pretty standard. Then it’s a question of weight. Generally a lighter hammock will also have slightly more stretch; how much stretch you want is personal, but it really doesn’t make that much difference to me. My main is Hexon 1.0oz but 1.9oz is just as comfortable.

Brand isn’t really that important. The materials are the same stuff and the craftsmanship is on par between manufacturers. The Dutchware Chameleon does have some extra features, but it really depends on what you’re looking for. Most people piece together a system, buying a hammock, tarp, and suspension separately.

It’s the size. They’re 9’ 4” long while 10.5’ or 11’ have become standard. A normal height man doesn’t fit comfortably in a 9’ 4” hammock.

A hammock is probably the second easiest DIY sewing project you can do, right after a stuff sack. It’s just a giant rectangle with straight stitches and two continuous loops of AmSteel. The materials for the hammock are like $30.

Okay, that kinda explains things: the Jungle Link is actually 10' long. Still not great, but it is longer than the SingleNest/DoubleNest that most people use.
I do think it's funny that ENO's website describes it as "extended" when it's still shorter than any serious company would make, though.

you like this thing? I have a hennesy that i like for just lounging in, but when it comes to actually sleeping in the thing, i find i have to use a lot of pillows or extra blankets to sleep comfortably, shoving them under my knees and lower back. Is it really flat?

I love it, it lays about as flat as a memory foam bed, you will have a hugging comfy dip for you butt, it's a bit loud and creeky though. I have only used it as a hammock tent though, not sure how ground feel is. And it's far superior to regular hammock set ups with quilts etc. I use my own rain fly rather than there's which saves about 80ish bucks on price tag

what size tarps do you guys use?

need one to cover my one person tent for a small cooking space, keep gear dry while being packed in the rain etc and the images on aliexpress are dodgy. some 3x3 tarps look huge, others perfect.

10x10 is a pretty large but universal size. Depends really on what the tent your covering is and how much extra room you want. If your tent is a 1p tube but waterproof you may want something small like an 8x5. If you're talking about a net tent, maybe a 10x8. Hammock tarps are often 11-12 long but shape optimized. That isn't terrible for admin or tents but possibly suboptimal.

Can confirm. Fell for the ENO meme cus I didn't know what I was doing and they're way too short to lie comfortably.

Their underquilts aren't too bad tho, and I'm a fan of the external bug net. Extra step to set up but I like the extra layer.
