Started last year and caught a new PB today. Dont have scale yet but definitely biggest I've caught.

Damn that was really good. Sweet like blue gill and flaky like crab. My young kids even came down and tried some when they smelled it frying up, ending up fighting over who got to eat the tail. I’ve caught tons of these guys but never bothered as I thought filleting would be tedious and unproductive. Turns out you just scale, gut, and lop the head off and you’re good to go!

They're fucking delicious. I say that as someone who swears by buttermilk-soaked catfish - this fucking guy was the best tasting freshwater fish I've had after Walleye & Trout. You can look up recipes but basically just cut the head off and gut/scale. Frying lets you eat the fins as they crisp up but I think grilling would work too. The bones are along the central plane for the most part and it's super simple to pull the meat off. Don't have a video but my kids figured out you could just pull the fins out and a bunch of meat would come off too. Filleting would be a nightmare as there really isn't much room to work with. I just tossed it in a cornmeal/flour mixture and fried it up with some zucchini and squash medallions in my iron cast and it was as simple as can be. Definitely a tasty treat I've been overlooking and will now bag hand sized ones and bigger when I go fishing in the creek.

Hay guize, I recently decided to take up fishing as a hobby. I met a fishing buddy, geared up & went river fishing today. Caught four small fish, including two orange spotted sunfish like this. All in all, I had a good time. So hopefully, it was the first of many such trips.

Pretty smallmouth bass I pulled out of a creek today using one inch gulp minnow on 1/16th ounce jigheads. Won't be using gulp minnows again even though they performed really well, they are just too fragile and expensive.

I just got into fishing again 6 months or so again after having not done it for about a decade during my vegan phase. This is largest bass I've caught since I started fishing again. Going to take my kayak out on lake soon and see if I can't catch a largemouth bass for the first time in a very long time. Georgia/Alabama/Tennessee area.

Guessing that you’re completely new to fishing based on that post so easiest thing for you would just be fresh (so not dry) bread with you. Roll a chunk of bread into a dense little ball and put it on the hook. Look for some vegetation near the shoreline like reeds and/or logs or fallen trees - fish like cover to hide under. Go out at dinner/dusk and cast into shaded spots and you should get some panfish like blue gill or some type of sunfish. They are aggressive and you shouldn’t have to worry about setting the hook, they’ll do that themselves. Then rinse and repeat. Bring a cooler and ice if you want to eat them, even the small ones can be cooked like the anon posted in this thread already.

Went fishing at a spot recommended by a friend. Big pike, big bass jumping like mad hell. Tried everything I brought with, varied techniques, couldn't even get a single bite while I was there.

I mean yeah they are edible, anything with scales is edible. Are they good? Hell no. Maybe in the winter or early spring but most of the time it’s going to be mushy and taste like a catfish mud-vein throughout their entire body. Young largemouth bass out of clean water are worse than crappies but better than large catfish. Bass out of bad water is mushy and muddy tasting. For best results, catch small (under 3 lb) bass from cooler water and bleed them immediately. If you can keep the filets in brine in the fridge overnight, that’ll help firm them up. I think the best preparation is to chunk the filets and batter fry like catfish, especially with the slightly bigger ones, but pan frying with thin breading like sunfish works good too, especially with the smaller ones.
That’s largemouth. Smallmouth are better table fare (probably because they live in better water, mostly), just as good as pumpkin seeds or red ears. Black Bass (spotted, largemouth, smallmouth, etc) are sunfish family fish, the stigma about eating them is 99% recreational fish botherers trying to encourage a better trophy fishery and not based on any facts, but that said, large predatory fish like bass and pike are reservoirs of bio-accumulation of toxins, so I wouldn’t eat any bass from polluted waters and I would strongly prefer to eat younger, smaller bass, but the same goes for northerns, catfish, and walleyes and all the other game fish praises for their qualities as table fare.

I use a modded 10 foot paddleboard to fish pretty much everywhere. The swelly and windy days can suck, but I do have the advantage of large swells having a tendency to wash over the board instead of tipping me. I use 2 x 5 lb hand weights for anchoring. In strong currents they tend to work more like a sea anchor than an actual anchor, slowing my drift speed significantly. I think you should be good, but start slow, and try to test your limits before going into rough stuff, or have a buddy at least. Your anchor should be fine for most calm day activities, and there are some pretty easy to build anchor trolley options online. Make sure the pulley portion is a metal that will not be easily corroded by salt water. The most important thing that I was not told was about hooking up big: you're not reeling in the fish, but feeling yourself to it, so keep some distance for a little while, so you don't end up with a pissed off and still green fish right beside you. Rod tip to the front as much as possible, because a run sideways increases your risk of tipping over. Once you get better at it, fighting the fish sideways does put more pressure on the fish and tires it out faster, though. Make sure to also have a life jacket and a good knife attached to it. Prepare accordingly for bad things to happen, because they will.

Another one. Still a shitty pic. It does give an idea of the size though. That's a ~50 gallon aquarium.

Bought it used for $25.00 and steam cleaned it before putting it to use. The goldfish are cleaners/feeders for the others.

Am trying to catch some local stream minnows to replace the other minnows.

Burbot answerer here. I think my second favorite fish are crappies caught through the ice. They don't taste as good in the summer. Walleyes and Northerns are also great to eat, and so are trout, I think that I like brookies better than rainbows (though it's close) and both of them better than Browns and Lakers. Sunfish are delicious if you've got the time to put in the effort, and catfish and bass are good to eat if you eat younger fish and prepare them properly.
The water you catch the fish out of makes a difference too.

What's a good collapsible, preferably lightweight pole for trout fishing? I've been doing a lot of hikes out to alpine lakes lately, and the trail descriptions always say that there are trout in them (I saw some jumping for bugs while camping last weekend) and I want something to do out there other than sit and read. A friend recommended a tenkara pole to me, but i've never used a pole that didn't have a reel and don't understand how that works.

I have the St Croix Triumph 4 piece and the Daiwa Spinmatic SMD 4 piece. I like the Triumph more, but the rod bag the Daiwa comes with is especially useless.

Still, the Daiwa is a good rod for a 7 foot UL that costs $55.

Caught these eater size channel cats here on a large reservoir in the southeast. They all bit a half of a nightcrawler on a Carolina rig that I had setting out for carp. Fun on a beater zebco 33.

Fish finder rig (one hook 6 inches up from pyramid sinker, one 18 inches up from that) with a crab or shrimp on the bottom hook and a baitfish or chunk of baitfish on the higher hook. Toss it 30-50 feet out and bounce it back to you slowly. I've become a Whistytwig fan myself, after poring over many options. I still have small Shakespeare and Coleman rods that are like 2 decades old, and took a risk on some Hurricane Mako rods when they were on sale. They're cheap and well made, but kind of stiff. The ceramic eyelets will break off with ease, but I repaired them pretty easily. The Whistytwigs are much more sensitive, and I have had really good luck with them. I have 2 x 7 ft 2 in and 1 x 10 foot rod. The 10 footer is actually what I cast my popping corks or smaller rigs with, and it hooked me a tarpon...for 2 whole jumps before he spit the lure. I also got a bonnethead shark from the board with the 10 footer, and the 7'2"s I use with great success with topwater walkers and other heavier lures, as well as trolling. They're pretty solid for the money. 2+ years in and they're still going strong. Stainless guides are solid as well. I rinse thoroughly and then oil them before collapsing them to assure they don't snap when being collapsed, because salt and some granules of sand can make that a definite risk. I can collapse them down and get into some pretty inhospitable places as a result, while keeping them safe in my rod holders, without risk of dunking my reels by laying them flat to the board. Picrel is the rod fighting in a bluefish caught on a 3/4 oz spoon.

I was on the fence about it, there's no minimum size limit but idk if it was big enough to eat anyway.
It did swim away and I didn't see it again, but if it was injured enough to not survive I think the alligator that lives in that canal got it. He ended up chasing my topwater lure later and ending the trip.

just use side cutters to cut off one shank on each treble, effectively making it a "double." the only real problem I have with trebles on lures is when a fish with a really small mouth hits it and gets it's top and bottom lip stuck shut. if you cut one shank off of a treble, you still have superior hook up rate but both shanks will be in a similar direction, so it usually only hooks one lip and is much easier to get out. I don't like any hooks with large barbs though, small barbs work fine in my experience and don't tear up a fish's mouth like a retardedly large barb. How the fuck are you snagging LMB? that literally never happens with LMB. either way, LMB scene sweares you need massive hooks, and you don't. retardedly large hooks with retardedly large barbs tear bass up bad. even if you "lip hook" a dink with a 5/0 hook, it's probably going through it's eye or forehead. I rarely use larger than a 1/0 for LMB. I always worry about gut hooks more, because that happens with lots of fish species, especially LMB. you can use specific hooks and methods to limit it luckily, and I've never got a gut hook on a treble(knock on wood). I think it just has too good of a hook up potential to make it to the gut before one of the points sticks. they can get it pretty deep, but if it's not a big treble, it's easy to get out gently. a gut hook with the typical 2/0 and bigger hooks bass boomers use is an instant certain death.

I use 3" paddletails, 4" slim wacky rigs, ect. the people I fish with probably take out a small LMB's eye every trip. or gut hook a decent bass with a retardedly big barbed hook while wacky rigging. half of the sub 2lb bass I catch are missing half of their mouth. popular bass tackle is geared towards the rare 1% sized hogs, so it's what people buy. they harm the smaller bass in the process.

I don’t want to intentionally hurt a fish but if a dink bass wants to eat a bait that’s nearly his size, I have no sympathy. I’ve really moved towards using overall larger lures to try and eliminate the chance of smaller fish biting. I do feel bad for deep hooked trout and panfish though

I think what went wrong is that the fish bit the tail of the lure, and with the shiwash hook behind the tail, the hook point is trailing with a 1 inch gap

I don't recommend floating running line with sinking tip for lakes. Intermediate running line with a sinking head works really well for less than 15ft of water and its the only option if you need 500+ grain lines. Multi-density lines really shine in lakes at all depths, something like a 3/5/7 or I/3/5 is all I use for most lake or big river fishing.

I like to use tactical backpacks. They usually have lots of separate pockets for different stuff and loads of straps/anchor points for you to attach things to the outside, they're meant to be worn comfortably for fairly long distances, and even the cheap ones are rugged.

that's a solid set up for the truckee. i mostly use a tight-line set up to fish a lot of the faster runs, which is where i've had luck finding them hiding in the warmer weather. i would definitely try to get out as early as possible and i would go towards the colder water upstream too. hardest part about fishing the truckee is figuring out where the fish are holding because the river is always changing. just cover as much of the river as possible.

with the spinning rig i would get some jigs (again go up stream, the hobo trash in the river east of the city is snag hell), cast up stream, and swim them down stream to imitate bait fish.

Ya I have a few of my dad's old ones, but he only used the big ones on a boat. Idk maybe I'm an outlier, but when I'm surf fishing for example I take one rod and I have a small box with carolina rig components, 8 assorted ~110mm hardbaits, about 10 jigs, two things of leader material, pliers, lippers, snacks and a water bottle and it all fits in my fanny pack fine.

Hard to say. Most of what I've built so far has been for myself and or for friends so I've kept cost low
Rod building isnt cheap, between components and shipping of stuff
So I try to not charge a ton for my time (that being said I've got a bit of a back order on rods now so times at more of a premium)
At this time
Completely outside of materials cost, shipping etc, I might charge 150+
The more complicated the build is the more I'd have to charge
Something basic in a single color with no artwork won't be much
Something that I spend 10 hours on the threadwork alone will be a fair bit more

If anyone is actually interested in a rod I'm happy to drop outside contact info and price a build out for someone

What's the smallest size channel cat you guys would keep to eat? I've been going to the river, I usually keep 2-5lb cats to eat but lately all I'm getting is these little guys probably a pound or not much bigger than 10 to 12 inches. There are some guides on guide placement, Fuji k frames has a calculator out there

It's not perfect but it's an okay starting point,
I've found a lot of the time it slightly underestimates the sizes so it may be worth going up a size

Most of what I do is just by eye,
Most everything I build is built based on a reel
Attaching a reel seat that's significantly larger than the rod
1 buy a proper sized reel seat that fits tighter
2 use arbors
3 ( and what I do and thinks work best ) wrap the blank in thin masking tape to build up the od of the blank
Not to build up the entirety of it. But to add support
I usually try to do one 1/4-1/2 inch in front either end of the reel seat and one in the middle of the reel seat
Then pack the gaps with rod building epoxy and slip the reel seat on
Tape centers the reel seat and gives it support, lots of epoxy hold it tight

Aligning guides is just a practice thing, look at a light background through them
Some people say to go based off the tip
That's stupid. Put a reel in the reel seat and base it on the reel seat working up,
You can always tweak them after wrapping and before sealing
Acid wrap rods are alright I guess. Haven't personally built any but I've got a friend who does
They're a decent option for conventional builds but have to be done properly or you'll end up with line stacking on one side of the reel more and it adds a bit more torsion to the blank
Not a huge use for them if you're not jigging or fishing straight up and down

It was my last day where I was, and I was pretty new to the SUP when I went out. Thankfully I had a convertible kayak/SUP paddle but I had no kind of back rest or seating, so even with the kayak paddle, I could get very little leverage. I've built onto the board significantly since then, and have made it something as seaworthy as I can. If you can afford to, get a pedal drive, but don't let not having one stop you either. Take advantage of the wind and current if you can by planning accordingly. It's always harder to come back against the wind after hours on the water. It is do-able though. Don't get panicked and dig deep and slow if you have to. Even if I have to get back one foot at a time, I will. If it's really bad and you have no pedal drive, you cannot afford to let up to rest even for a second or you'll lose any momentum you've gained and start drifting away from your destination. I definitely feel more confident on rivers and bays still than oceans, and I also enjoy trying to locate leeward areas. I have had great luck getting to a leeward area, and casting into the windward areas around it. Anywhere that the wind or current have some sort of change seem to bring fish. Maybe I've just been lucky. I do wish I could work more with the tides than I do, but sometimes with my setup that's asking for trouble. I don't tempt fate. Wear a life jacket or PFD with a good knife on it as well. It saved my life, and I know I look stupid. If I hadn't, I would have been a less stupid looking corpse. Smooth days are amazing though, especially if there are fish moving about. Wind and current tend to bring better bites though.
