I have 2 older realistic radios, a TRC-217 & TRC-88. I am looking to get some newer radios though. /k/k shills Baofeng, and I looked at the UV-5R, but reviews say it is crippled by the FTC and only works on HAM radio spectrum. What is a good two way multi-band digital radio for $120 or less?

Okay fuck that guy. I am not interested in a HAMplanet license. I want a radio that can transcieve during emergencies (in my area this means wildfire moving at 60+ mph or being injured/sick/lost in extremely remote area of the southern Cascade Mountain range).

Just to clarify, the supposed "cucking" is being locked out of transmitting on FRS and GMRS which can be turned back on by hitting 3 buttons. You're also not going the get a digital radio of this type of any quality for less than $150, Baofengs are analog.

So what the fuck do you think one of these radios will help you with? If you're so far out into the middle of nowhere that you don't get cell reception, who do you think is going to be close enough by to hear you trying to call for help with one of these? Do you even have an idea of what frequencies you'd by trying to call for help on? There isn't a simple channel 1-22 or channel 1-40 selector like on blister pack radios from Walmart or a CB radio.

Unless you have a nearby basecamp you can radio back to or you know how to use repeaters and which ones operate in your area, AND have somebody who'll actually be listening for your transmissions, you're probably not going to be talking to anybody at all on your Chinkfeng. Anon is right>>2418389

I use mine for the novelty of talking to basecamp when I'm hiking or listening to NOAA or whatever FM station comes through

Notpoor /k/ tourist here, check out the Anytone D878UV series, it costs more than a Baofeng but nowhere near as much as a Motorola, it's a very powerful and flexible radio.

VHF/UHF radios like the Baofeng are worthless if your goal is to contact a random stranger while away from a populated area. You either need to have someone within a few miles who even has a radio and have a good idea of what frequency they might have it tuned to and which privacy tone they're using if they're using one (your chances of reaching someone quickly drop to zero otherwise due to the massive amount of frequencies and privacy tones you'd need to try), or you need to use a repeater which generally aren't going to cover areas that don't have cell phone coverage today unless you set it up yourself and either have other people load that frequency into their scan list to check on you or set up such an amazing repeater that other people actually want to use it over other options that already have very little activity today.

They're right. The ham license isn't really about being 'licensed'. It's about:
1. knowing vaguely wtf you're doing
2. being ABLE to practice, talk to people, hit repeaters and see who is listening etc. Without a ham license you won't do this.

Just saying, if the first time you try to use that radio is during an emergency you won't know who the fuck to contact, how to use the radio properly, or anything really. Ham license is fuck-easy to get. You have to be a retard to fail the technician test.

Then I actually did watch the stupid youtube videos and realized how much I didn't know I didn't know. So then I took the test following it and just being able to practice freely gave me a lot more familiarity with it all.
