Has anyone here ever summited McKinley/Denali?
It has been a dream of mine ever since the first time I saw it as a kid, but I haven't done a lot of mountaineering in my life so I can't imagine I'm prepared.

Im not whining? Ive been getting back into /out/ shit with a vengeance and have some plans to do small summits. Im more asking about how the mountain is viewed by people who have done it. How challenging a climb?

Not a mountaineer, but I enjoy watching youtube vids of climbs gone wrong. Denali seems like tough one. Not as bad as K2 or anything, but still a serious climb that you really want to know your shit for. I would find a local mountaineering club and join up to get some practice on easier summits and make some friends you can rope up with.

Denali is actually one of the harder mountains from what I have heard and read. It requires technical ice climbing I think could be wrong

Can I hire a plane to lift my fat ass back to the top of a mountain? Like I hike down, following a creek trail then a helicopter appears and hoists me back up to the upper trailhead? That seems really nice.

my boss' boss has summited Denali, Everest, and did Kiliminjaro barefoot. Former marine (I suspect possibly black ops or something secretive like that), man is absolutely wild. I respect the fuck out of him, his bounces around from idea to idea like I do but he somehow is the most detail oriented person I know, no clue how he does it.

The challenge of Denali is pretty much just physical. The standard route up the West Buttress is extremely physically demanding, you are typically carrying a 50lb pack while also pulling a 100lb sled up the mountain. However, it is not technical beyond knowing how to walk in crampons and how to travel in a rope team for the glaciers.

I just finished a few hour interview of someone who has climbed Denali a few times. I obviously wasn't talking about approaching it anytime soon, but I don't think I realized just how intensive that mountain is. I've done Rainier, I've done a few smaller Alaskan peaks, so I have some experience with glacier climbing and what that feels like, but denali seems like another beast. I figured it would be at most an 11 or so day trip, but the idea that an average first time is closer to the mid 20s scares me. I almost want to try and climb it so the guides turn me down and provide me with a list of peaks I should summit before coming back (which apparently they do), is it generally considered the hardest peak in North America?

Also I should add do you know if there is a camp 5? He was saying he summited from camp 4 but that people were telling him the best mountain climbers in the world fail a camp 4 summit. I know i don't have the physical strength to do a summit of ~12 hours especially after covid. Is there an easier summit or are you stuck just doing that. Google gives me weird results when I search if.

Eh I wouldn't consider Denali the hardest. Something like Mt St Elias which is by the coast and constantly hit my completely shit weather would likely be more difficult.

Neither white Alaskans or native Alaskans have called it mckinley, such that the state of Alaska renamed it by itself 50 years ago since the feds wouldn't. Denali is a descriptive name in its native tongue, mckinley is faggy as can be and more so knowing the guy had nothing to do with Alaska.
