I'm looking for a cook set and stove for two people for ~week-long backpacking trips.
Lightweight would be nice, but is not the primary concern.
Shooting to stay under $100 for both if possible.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a 3 or 4 piece aluminum set, and either a simple pocket rocket type deal or solid fuel.

What do you guys use / prefer?

I'm a little hesitant to reply to this thread since we have one every week but here goes.

The MSR pocket rocket is great, but some people prefer the $8 amazon.com chinese copy. Primus and MSR make some great white gas / multi fuel stoves, but they are more expensive.

Primus, MSR, GSI all make good cookware. I have pic related, which is an MSR 1.1 liter pot, it's awesome, stainless, not the lightest thing around, and all that shit in the picture fits inside, including the fuel and stove, in it's case.

You don't need a 3/4 piece aluminium set, that's probably overkill. If you carry a water bottle, you'll want to get the gsi canteen cup which weighs nothing and takes no space at all, since it slides right over your water bottle.

On the subject of water bottles, you like coffee? Get a GSI h2j0. It's a little filter that screws into your water bottle, so you can filter coffee through it.

I've since replaced the bottle in this picture with a klean kanteen 40oz stainless bottle. It doesn't take on a nasty coffee smell, it's more durable, and holds more liquid. Combine that bottle, the canteen cup, and my 1.1liter pot, I have 3 containers that I can boil water in. The coffee filter nests inside the bottle, the bottle nests inside the cup, and the stove/fuel/utensils/matches/ferro rod/canister stand/pot scraper/spork all fit inside the pot, so it takes up minimum space. This is one of the most important things for me, and you should most certainly keep nesting in mind when you go out shopping.

GSI, MSR, Primus, and some other companies also make some great camp kitchen nicknacks that are real lifesavers too. I use this pot scraper, it's awesome. A few different companies make them. I don't brink a dedicated food knife, I just use my regular camp knife. GSI makes some great waterproof spice containers, there's one called the "spice rocket" and they also have just a regular salt and pepper shaker that I use as well.

Your cookset is also a great place to stash some extra matches or an extra lighter, in fact I encourage you to cram as much stuff inside there as possible, otherwise it's wasted empty space in your pack.

The rocket style stoves are usually pretty good on fuel, but it depends on the type of cooking and weather conditions. Wind is the greatest enemy of fuel efficiency in outdoor stoves. If I'm re-hydrating pastasides and egg powder I can push a canister for several days, but I've also used a whole canister in one day when making things that need to cook longer.

I also have a Primus omnifuel stove, which I feel is much more fuel efficient, but it's way heavier, does not nest into my cookset, and costs over twice what the pocket rocket does, therefore, it's my winter and weeklong adventure stove.

Another thing to consider with the pocket rocket stoves is that the fuel does not burn well once you get close to freezing temperatures. Generally the colder you get with a canister stove, the worse it performs, although when you go up in elevation it tends to regain some of its efficiency.

As far as alcohol stoves go, is there a huge difference in cooking with cookstove-specific fuel and generic rubbing alcohol?

Do not use rubbing alcohol. Use denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is less efficient. It takes the burner much longer to "bloom" so you will end up using more fuel. Also rubbing alcohol does not burn clean. Meaning it will soot the bottoms of your pot. Denatured alcohol is cheap and can be bought at most hardware and big box stores.

I've got a Primus Yellowstone and I dig it.

It's not as compact as a Pocket Rocket, but it's got fewer moving parts, wider heat distribution and easier temperature control (IMO).

The other nice thing about canister stoves is that the canisters are all universal, so you can buy whatever is on sale and it will still work with your stove (unless you have one of those Gaz stoves).

Iso-butane condenses in cold weather so it doesn't burn as efficiently, unless you plunk down the big bucks for an MSR Reactor or Jetboil stove.

Not necessarily a deal-breaker, but something to be mindful of.

If you want simple and light weight, alcohol/solid fuel is a pretty good option.

Another option could be an MSR whisperlite Universal. It's a liquid fuel stove that comes with fittings to burn just about any flammable liquid so you're never really out of fuel. The have a pretty awesome lifespan, too. The downside is that they're pricey, take a lot more cleaning and it takes a bit of practice to use it well.

Hm those pot scrapers look handy, I never knew of such a thing. I carry one of those spoon/forks like you have there, use an opinel and have a nalgene mini set. Can cook up some tasty din with that.

The gas and high BTU fuel burners are lighter-on if you need to carry a decent duration of fuel than an equivalent metho burner. On the other hand, it can be hard to tell how much gas you have left in a can, and I don't fully trust the reliability of the pressure pumps for other fuels. There's nothing really to go wrong with a metho, except having to carry a bit more weight in fuel.

I like the Trangia which also has primus gas and multifuel burner options.

I don't cook.

My meals consist of bread, dry sausage, dried veggies, semolina, trail mix and instant soup. None of that requires cooking, but then I carry a simple steel plate and a cup, so if I want to warm something I can only light a small fire and put it right over it.

It helps me save a lot of weight, and don't think eating cold is a bad thing, as eating warm won't make you really warmer, and will mostly make you feel even colder. You'd better get some proper clothing rather than focus so much on eating warm.

Agreed on the Universal, I have the omnifuel which is pretty similar and I've burned propane, tiki torch fuel, and everything in between. Another great thing about these type stoves is you can invert an isobutane canister and it will put the liquid mix through the generator like it would with any other liquid fuel, thus restoring most of the efficiency.

I can speak for the dualist. It's great. We have a GSI halulite kettle also, and it's just as awesome. We also have the GSI pinnacle basecamp and it is, as you may have guessed, awesome.

I've had my pump leather invert a couple times, I had to take the pump shaft out and re-situate it. Wasn't that big of a deal but I can be frustrating. Every time it's happened to me it was because I overpumped it.

I'm glad you can heat your meals over a campfire. In my neck of the woods most places around the trail are either no campfires allowed or we're stealthing and don't want to draw attention.

I'm a little jelly. Sorry that other people are shitposting at you.

There seems to be some confusion. In your first post you came across that you don't heat your meals at all. But you do heat them, just over a fire.

That's cool.

But fires aren't always an option for some trips, so having a stove and a warm meal isn't a bad compromise for a little more weight in your pack.

I'm usually a warm breakfast, cold lunch, hot dinner kinda guy myself.

Something about a hot soup or some steaming beans and rice after a long day footin' it just makes me feel good.

Not to mention, I can eat whenever I want and don't need to wait for anything. This, along with the weight and bulk loss from the lack of a stove really makes things better, even if I sometimes have to eat cold.

If you're ready to give up on guaranteed warm food and a bit less diversity in meals for a lighter and smaller pack, you should try it. It only takes a little getting used to after all.

I've been using a self-made soda can stove for years, and everyone who sees it in action loves it. It costs nothing, weighs nothing, and boils fast. Not to mention the satisfaction of making your own stove. The great thing about them is that alcohol is an inherently efficient fuel, so even if you make a few mistakes when you're making it, chances are it will still work great. It's also easy to find fuel, just buy the yellow bottle of HEET available in pretty much any gas station. It's a car fuel additive that costs a couple dollars and it burns very clean! One bottle should last you almost a week of cooking two meals a day.

I started with a penny-pot design, which served me well for over a thousand miles of the AT. As I plan my next long hike I'm switching designs. Look up "tetkoba's Alcohol Stove R&D". That guy's designs are amazing. I've built a few and, though mine aren't as pretty, they work great! I'm leaning toward the capillary hoop stove universal.

I'd love to upload a photo of my whole setup, which all fits nicely in my msr titanium pot, but I can't tonight. Next time this thread rolls around I'll have some photos ready. But check out that youtube channel, that's basically what I use.

Eggs are bretty gud and I'll pack them on shorter excursions, but I don't like bringing them with me on long trips and I've never really liked dehydrated eggs.

Small farm eggs are definitely better than grocery store eggs for long trips, though, because they don't need to be kept cold and the shells are less fragile.

I used to get fresh eggs from some friends who had backyard chickens, but a raccoon killed their flock and they decided not to replace them.

Cup of hot coffee is my no.1 essential for a stove breakfast.
Home farm eggs sound amazing, i've only ever bought them on the go from farms I was passing, it's a shame your friends didnt re-stock the livestock.
I'm from the UK so have never really come across Johnny cakes except for in The Sopranos but they sound really good. And as far as im concerned, I'm definitely up for a cook/out/ thread.

Not that anon but here is my solo setup including my DIY soda can stove. The windscreen/potholder is made from a aluminum flashing (used in roofing) and a wire coat hanger. It all nests together with room for extra matches and my gsi folding spork.

I'm pretty sure they don't clean them with any extreme methods because you still get the odd, albeit rare, feather or dropping on the shell occasionally. I asked google in the hope of giving you a more informed answer but all i got was adverts for pressure washers.

It's also partially why we have more egg-based salmonella outbreaks here, the other reason being that most first world countries require big farms to inoculate their chickens against salmonella.

But in America, most big farming operations pressure wash the eggs (when really, all you have to do is wipe the poop off) in the name of great cleanliness (this all stems back to weird health and purity movements from late 19th and early 20th century) so the eggs shells become more permeable and the eggs have to be kept in the fridge.

That's a sweet setup anon. Did you use carbon felt for a wick in that stove? Also I've considered a combination wind screen potholder before, but it seemed a little bulky. I might try it next time around.

Btw, I pretty much only drink coffee on the trail to counter constipation, which tends to happen to some people within the first week or so of a hike. Something about the change in diet and sweating/hydration patterns I guess. So... on mornings when I can't be bothered to heat up some coffee, I carry a little bag of chocolate covered espresso beans. Those things are awesome! I can pop some in my mouth before I even get out of my sleeping bag!

The bottom of the pot has radiator fins on it to absorb and distribute heat more efficiently.

It was designed for mountaineers to counter the inefficiency of iso-butane canisters in cold temperatures, but spread out to backpackers and other /out/ types who simply wanted to boil water quickly.

MSR has a similar set-up call the Reactor.

I....I kinda want to get a biolite.

Not for backpacking or mountaineering, mind you, it's way to heavy and impractical.

But I kinda want to get one for beach picnics, party camping and keep in my emergency kit.

Also because I kinda like the company, they're working on bigger biolite systems for under-developed areas/off-the-grid living and that's pretty cool I think.

Like you could have a cabin with one big biolite stove that heats, cooks and produces electricity.

I spent a lot of time laughing at the biolite, but then when I read more about company I thought it was a pretty cool operation and wanted to support it somehow.

I just dig companies that use their retail arm to push R&D on stuff that makes people's lives better. Goal Zero, Sawyer and Lifestraw do kinda the same thing.

If you're looking at the biolite as a stove first and a charger as a gimmicky bonus, it actually works well. There was a video where some guy compared the weight of the biolite to other stoves, and what he determined is that if you're packing for a week or more, the weight of the fuel you need to carry to run a isobutane or liquid fuel stove actually outweighs the biolite. Obviously you can scrounge biolite fuel almost anywhere, so it's really a matter of how long you are planning on being out.

I wouldn't get one just because I've spent enough money on my other stoves, and I wouldn't have one as my only stove, but it really is a viable option for long term stoving.

I don't see why anyone would need this charging. I never get much phone reception when out so I just turn it off so there's always charge. I do take an electric book with me but the battery lasts for weeks on that and I can get an extra charge from a small portable usb battery.

I think the biolite is a good stove for cooking, with the fan and all, but more of a gimmick for charging things. I don't think it can even charge AA batteries.

The stove fits nicely inside a little one cup measure, which I think came with my rice cooker.

The little GSI spatula is the best thing ever for cleaning the pot after use: instead of washing it out and wasting food, scrape it clean and eat every last bit.

Note the big spiraling blue flames shooting out of the thing. Yeah I love it.

nah, it's just straight aluminum. I use it to boil water and then mix the food or coffee in the cup. some people wrap them in fiberglass twine so they can grab it off the stove. I just use the bandanna. the GSI cup and the bottle carrier are really just dead weight in the long run but, I like the convenience.

I also have a Ti Spork for the purposes of trolling /out/ but, I generally carry a plastic spork from the Taco Bell on the corner. I make a spoon if I get bored.

I have this too and it is plenty. A MSR MicroRocket with gas fits inside. It is a little overkill for my use, because when we head out we won't be gone for more than three days and so we mostly east soup, pasta and chocolate. All of these can easily be done in a Jetboil. But great set none the less.
