anyone have experience with, or advice for, camping with a baby? my daughter is 9months and the wife and are are itching to do some canoe camping, but the kid is bottle fed and we are concerned with the logistics of cleaning/prepping bottles

Recent parent here. Honestly, a lot of it will depend on where you live and what you’re expectations are for the trip. My wife also wanted to take our daughter camping this past spring and summer, and she just turned 1 last week.

Personally, I think the way you experience the outdoors changes just like everything else does in your life once you have kids. Before our daughter, we would do multiple overnights backpacking through the cascades and other wilderness areas in Washington. Now, we’ve been car camping and I’ve started to enjoy the trips as less of a physical challenge and a adventurous feat and more of a way to expose my daughter to nature and spend time relaxing. When she’s older and more capable, we’ll return to the backpacking trips. For now, we car camp at lakes, streams, quiet places away from lots of people and we spend time helping her walk, pick up cool bugs and plants, reading to her, showing her the stars, etc.

I have a 9 month old bro. I’ve gone on 0 hikes since he was born and it’s killing me. But going WITH him seems like hell until he’s like 1.5 or 2. I have an 11 and 9 year old, and that’s when shit got really good again.

just ease into things, start with short hikes and get them longer and longer. babies need to learn how to nap in the carrier. once you get that going then you can easily do all day treks. I haven't done any camping yet though but I'm planning to this fall

Just bring some camp soap and a bottle brush, that’s not hard at solve at all.
The hardest part will probably be naps.
My kid fights going to sleep like crazy unless the room is very dark

Don't go for extended trips, don't expect sleep, get a full body bunting. Ideally I just wait till a year when you get the all clear to drink cow milk and you can just bring a pint or two in a cooler and supplement with some solid food.
And yeah, they won't nap most likely unless you drive around with them in their car seat. They like dirt a lot at that age, try to keep their dirt ingestion to a minimum. They will almost definitely not sleep in a tent at night either. But I slept in the covered bed of my pickup and my kids were amenable to snuggling down and sleeping back there.
Bottle brush and unscented soap, little extra water for washing. Easy.
Oh, and if you're somewhere without trash cans, gallon Ziploc bags for dirty diapers.

Personally I decided to wait until my kid was 2-3 and could tell me if she was not cold, in pain etc. I just went on personal trips until then.

Been doing canoe camping every year since pic related turned 2. I am not sure if it's a good idea with 9mo, I'd give it a try with car-camping to.

But I advice canoe camping with kids, kids enjoy canoeing while a mile hike on rough trail can be exhausting even for a 4-5yo.

They don't care about scenary, campfire and food, they haven't read books or watched movies, they won't be pretending they are pioneers in a canoe or something. Based on my two daughters I can say untill 3 they weren't really fit for it, though I am not sure. So >>2423711 is probably right.

Are there even safe PFDs for kids that age?

Not a big deal took my 1 year old camping at a normie campsite. No different then at home - let them explore but hover so they don’t eat rocks and stuff. Was some good /out/ bonding time with my boy for sure.

We slept in a queen size set up with the little man in the middle - Canada so it gets a bit cool at night.

This will depend a lot on how good your wife is at handling stress and managing the baby. It will require that both of you be cool with 30% of the time spent dealing with diapers and feeding. Some babies are just shitty babies though and it won’t be fun at all. At that age my twins were impossible to take anywhere so I didn’t even bother. Newborn through 6 months is easy, then it’s a nightmare, but then at about 3 years old on it gets progressively easier. Now they are almost 6 and I take them camping by myself easily.
