I've done some backpacking and I'm getting more into it. But popular trails are so linear, so one dimensional. I want to explore the vast open wilderness we have in the West. I want to go off trail deep innamountains, places nobody ever goes. My ultimate goal is to disappear for about a week in the Galiuro Mountains, one of the most inaccessible ranges in Arizona.

Anyone else into 2D backpacking? What do you carry in these remote areas?

Not OP, but what PLB do you have that doesn’t require a subscription?
Zolio and Spot both require a subscription to use that SOS button, but maybe I’m wrong?

rescue me plb - the ones that require a subscription do so for communication features - iirc the sos button works no matter what but you want something with an actual antenna that can fold out like the rescue me has - garmin is moneyrape of the worst kind

I like the sound of that. Ty. I like my Garmin gps for the price I bought it for, but that's it. The most of can hold is like 4gb memory cards which fucking sucks. They went like $400 for 1:1 data of the US. They give you a year to download whatever for free, but you'd be home for 2 weeks downloading shit. All the subscription products for rescue are annoying.

The software on the garmin alone is a deterrent to use. They have a monopoly so they have no incentive to update their garbage 2002-tier software. Like literally it's 20 years old programming that's barely updated.

Alltrails is like buying a new computer for the first time in a decade by comparison despite the glitches. I have a basic Garmin that I never use. Being able to download new tracks on the fly is a huge advantage.

Same. I have the GPS map 64. I've used it once. I got it for half off, so whatever. This unit you linked, it says marine. You have faith it'll point a satellite in the valley of a mountain range?

there's a bunch of clones all around the same price - the brand doesn't really matter much I don't think just make sure to practice turning it on if needed before you stuff it in your pack.

This is what allows you to navigate with no cell signal as long as you have an app that allows you to download maps ahead of time

I figured that would be ok, but we live in dense woods and mountains. The Garmin can take quite a while to establish a link.

Yeah, but my phone isn't as durable as one of these devices. That device you linked can get wet, take a hit, and hold a charge for 7 years.

your phone can get wet if its reasonably new - most can handle it, I hope you have your phone in a case and with a screen protector. And, as I said, a Chinesium battery backup pack and cord for that will serve you well. There's no need to buy into Garmin's shitty outdated devices.

It still ends up being massively cheaper and easier to use than Garminshit devices. You CAN download georeferenced pdfs for free sometimes to Avenza now that some states have on their websites or there's other ways to get it without paying but it's more effort and less organized.
It's 30 a year and honestly that's not so bad.

The point is they allow you to send text messages with no cell service. A phone is worthless for backcountry communication, and a PLB only lets you summon SAR. Satellite lets you tell people if you change your route or decide to stay out an extra day or something.

It certainly feels like it. Topo Nomad is worth checking out. It allows 5 maps to be uploaded for free, or pay $10 (one time fee) for infinite uploads. There’s in-app access to USGS 7.5’ topos, or you can upload whatever geospatial PDF’s you find elsewhere.

I use CalTopo (free with limited usability but enough for me) to make custom sized maps with notes, save them, then upload to the Topo Nomad app. I also print them at Kinko’s for like $1 each.

Available on Fdroid, ie, where you get non-subscriptionware apps that don't spy on you 24/7.
OpenTopoMap is simpler and works fine.

Or you can just use caltopo.com to make your own maps and learn to use a compass like an actual man.

Incredibly based.
I usually print full foldout sized maps, tape them together instead of paying $100 for a large print (which costs $10 in the third world, and paper and ink don't cost any different there).

Note, there is a layer of sat imagery blended in (38% on caltopo) with terrain shading (16%), which helps greatly in discerning different microterrains like 'pine forest' vs 'deciduous' or paths/streams/etc that the USFS maps miss. It's more visible when printed, where everything gets darker picrel.

I can tell here that I have crossed the 7170 line in the north side if I have moved in/out of a straight border of pine and oak. Can't tell that from just the topo map without sat imagery. Likewise, there's usually small glens/stands that can help greatly with location in areas with few landmarks or relief. And the terrain shading helps a ton with reading the topo lines.
