Have you ever hiked on something that isn't a smoothed out path? Having something like hiking boots to keep your ankle from rolling is huge. If you're on a 3 day hike and you roll your ankle you're fucked.

I have done multiple hikes in the Cascadian Range and British Columbian falls that have stretched almost 2 days long, I boxed the boots for a pair of Mongrel Hiker shoes which were nice but recently I've started to just wear my New Balances. I have only sprained my ankle once in the 6 years I have been hiking and after twenty minutes of resting I was able to hobble and shuffle myself back to my truck. Quit being a pussy.

Yeah, I have rolled my ankle before. What am I supposed to do? Whimper and sit in place? You rest for a couple minutes and put more of your weight and gravity onto the other foot before (uncomfortably and slowly) limping back.

hiking boot ankles don't go high enough to stop rolling. in addition they are heavier than trailrunners making them more likely to roll your ankle than a trailrunner.
combat boots are worse than hiking with a rolled ankle the entire time to begin with.

I live in MT and hike al 4 seasons here, WY, ID, and some in northern CA. Wear TSLA Minimalist shoes I buy for $40 from Amazon.

These are fine I have never rolled my ankle because I don't have weak ankles. Never gotten too cold or hurt my foot on a rock or whatever else boots are supposed to protect from because I am straight.

Last I hiked the Tetons there was a big group of guys in boots I passed and most looked like queers and probably were. Also saw 2 boomers in boots go from the visitor center parking lot to the lake which is like 1.5 miles. Seem to be a big overlap between boot wearers and soft, pasty, weak, limp wristed fair weather retards who don't get far from their cars. Their bodies need essentially an exoskeleton to even walk, otherwise they will literally break apart.

Enjoy walking down this moraine carrying 25kg pack. I am speaking from experience, done it in trail runners, do not recommend. Going up was perfectly fine, but I did regret it all the way back down.

Different anon but 'switch' isn't the right term. I still own boots and use them for some activities, like snow or very heavy pack weights or really brushy areas. I just don't use them for most hiking and backpacking anymore. Even rocky trails seem to be handled better by being light and sure-footed rather than a hard sole in a heavier boot, have actually had less ankle issues than boots. The lighter shoe and sole flexs more and I can adjust as soon as I feel more footing go. Also useful is less knee pain. My feet hurt more but its a muscle pain, rolled out and a rest and it's back to 100%

People on the PCT get 600+ miles out of their shoes, some even 900+, but they actually get proper ones

I bought a couple pairs of boots when I started solo camping before getting my first pair of lone peaks and wearing out the rock plate base. Got another pair of altras and some brooks cascadias and honestly prefer them to the lone peaks because of the cushion. So it's a balance, more weight but more cushion and support than ultra minimalist zero drop shoes.
Ironically, I like to wear my heavy vasque and oboz boots as everyday shoes now, even bought a pair of targhees because the insole is softer and the old beaters are getting worn down to garden boots.
