This big hickory on the edge of my property has a lot of rot in it. Is there anything I can do to save it?

Best move is to cut a ring around the trunk, about 1/4" deep and around a foot from the ground.

You can do it with a chainsaw right quick but with some effort a hand saw like a Silky or a Sven. Worst case light chops with a hatchet just keep going around the tree until you meet the first cut you made..

Tree is fine.
It doesn't need the core and can live for another 200 years like that.
Just keep out insects and animals. Dormant oils in the winter at a bare minimum.

I'm not an expert but that looks like a disease. Some trees can be saved but some diseases are fatal. Sorry I can't help further than that. I would ask a local nursery or arborist company, they might be familiar with it.

it's how injuns would do it as well, they weren't interested in clearing land for this year's crops, they were interested in the slow game.

I girdled a tree once and didn't find it in the woods again for some 15 years. it was certainly dead but still standing.
