How do you get good at camping/hiking/hunting? Is this even possible if you have zero knowledge and grew up in an urban city?

Should I not even try?

Experience. Never hunted before until last year. I did two 5 day solo trips and a few weekend hunts where I hiked over 100 miles. Did a lot of research and just said fuck it and went out there. First few nights were scary sleeping alone. Also, just being in your head for that long you revisit every mistake, failure, success, etc in your life. You'll dearly miss your family. You have to be in shape but mostly it's mental toughness especially if you're solo. Hunting is expensive as shit too. Between my bow/arrows/target, pack, sleeping system, boots, food, etc I probably spent around $3-4k last year on gear just to get started. Not including my truck I also bought for $17k, new tires another $1k, misc maintenance and gas. Also the time you need to put in to getting proficient at shooting your bow. I did call in 2 bulls to within 50 yards last year which was pretty cool but my setups were shit so I didn't have a shot. If you've never heard a bull elk bugle irl or seen one up close it's way different than in videos. Shit is intense af.

Yes it’s possible. Like the other anon said. Just go hike. Next time hike a bit further. Then go camping. Then go hike in and camp in the woods. Each time you’ll learn and gain confidence, and you’ll slowly acquire the gear.

Hunting is pretty much this plus shooting. Most states offer/require some sort of free hunters education and you can take lessons to learn how to shoot a rifle. And then you go hunt squirrels, then you go scouting for deer in the off-season, then you hunt deer.

You won’t gain experience posting on /out/. Get outside and do it.

the best advice is just get /out/

start with marked trails that are rated as easy or low-intensity, work your way up.

start with marked camp sites that are drive-able and come with some infrastructure, like a fire pit or whatever, work your way up.

start with target practice and move up towards life-sized targets of game animals, then move on to a proper hunt.

it's just practice. even the mountain men had to start somewhere. And I guarantee that an urban kid who realizes he knows nothing about outdoorsmanship will learn faster than a rural kid who thinks he already knows everything.
