Watched it once and enjoyed it, love the Yukon myself and have backpacked around where he was.

I liked it the first time just because it was in an awesome place and has a sick premise, but when I went to watch it again I found myself really dislike Wardle. Not because he got lonely or was unprepared, those are totally forgivable and understandable in that situation, but he just dealt with those emotions in such a whiny way. Like, it makes sense he would complain to the cameras, I would do the same thing. But instead of using the camera work as a coping mechanism it seemed like he really wanted someone to feel bad for him and it frustrated him that the cameras didn't reflect his self pity.

I don't know if that makes any sense, but bottom line the guy annoyed me. Would not go /out/ with. Still, he deserves respect for going up there in the first place and lasting as long as he did, people give him more shit than he deserves.

I don't even like the premise of it as he wasn't allowed to hunt big game and was using a pole rather than a net. anyone actually living there would be smoking meat and smoking fish that they caught with a net, granted on probably a much bigger river.

Saw it on British tv a few years ago, thought it was really quite good. Only thing I didn't like was how he sent up loads of long range shots, which meant he had to walk twice the distance, as he had to go and collect them again. I wouldn't have minded, except for the fact that he started moaning about how exhausted he was then kept doing it. I want an interesting and accurate documentary first and foremost, being nicely shot is just a bonus.

He says the Canadian government doesn't want him hunting big game, making it sound like they specifically told him. But I'm pretty sure he was referring to a law in the Yukon that makes it illegal for most people who aren't residents of the territory to hunt there.

All you need to do is talk to whatever tribe owns that land and send a request to the government in the capital to get permission, I can't imagine why they'd decline seeing as the process is made for special cases like his.

And even if he was denied permission, so fucking what, kill a moose off camera and live like a king. Say to the camera you found the moose freshly dead and abandoned and imply that you're bullshitting so the viewers know what happened.

Watched that a year and a half ago or so. Most painful shit ever to watch. Didn't even build up experience with sc/out/ing first. Just jumped into hard mode and cried the whole time, then the ultimate insult, he pusses out and calls for help. Not even worth making a documentary about.

It would be one thing to cry, and then endure and meet your objectives. Everybody loses morale when they realize how in the shit they are. But god damn, if he pusses out you don't go forward with it as something worth viewing. It's not. It's shameful and embarrassing.

It shows you how you break down, slowly but surely, by the isolation of the wilderness. He even stated that he was fairly new to survival and shit, so for rednecks/countryfolks this task might not be as grand as it was for him.

I think it could've been better managed, but definitely left in some of the motivations. One thing I've noticed on many /out/ threads and/or forums is that everyone thinks they're a fucking badass who can survive an eternity without company or anything to keep them company.

Your thoughts will start to wander and break you down.

Just my opinions.

To be fair, just being alone that long is a serious challenge for most people. The US Army survival manual has a section on not just giving up and killing yourself. It's in there for a reason.

sees a bear and immediately turns his back to it and starts walking away

instead of filming the point of interest, he makes it a point to keep the camera on his face

leaves the guts of a fresh kill just feet from his camp

constantly talking about human psychology and loneliness after being in the wilderness for less than 15 days

cooks an entire porcupine, constantly fishing and 2 days later is complaining about lack of food

wastes a ton of time checking snares which are obviously set up in terrible places for small game

spends an hour stalking a squirrel just to shoot at it and miss

has literally an arsenal of equipment to help him

builds a full size lean-to but already has a hammock and tarp for shelter (why waste the energy)

I can't think of a thing this guy does right. at least he can start a fire with a ferrite rod

But this is why it's a good documentary.

The best Les Stroud episode I've seen was the one 10 Days in Norway where he almost dies at the side of a mountain in winter, cold and damp with night approaching. That's just an hour after abandoning a perfectly good cabin that had food and warmth.

He makes a few shitty decision and finds himself utterly stuck and for a brief moment you can see in his eyes the thought "did I just kill myself.. am I filming my last hours".

This board and /k/ and.. /pol/ I guess are full of innawoods dreamers thinking they could make it. If there were more realistic documentaries about people almost getting killed and not making good decisions maybe we wouldn't have as many "I WATCHED BEER GRILLS AND I KNO HOW 2 SURVIVE" idiots.

Just a thought.

The culmination of those things led to him being miserable and underfed.

Anyone who's lived on the edge of starvation knows the feeling of not being able to make clear decisions, and it's scary. Pile that on top of seemingly never having been in bear country and you get a dude who's in over his head. I'm sure at least half of the people who claim to go /out/ on this board have been doing so in bear populated areas since they were kids, so the fear he exhibited seemed exaggerated. If he had shot that first moose the next two episodes would have been him sitting by the first lake chewing moose fat and scaring off bears. Short of that, frankly I'm impressed he did as well as he managed.

He realised many of his mistakes after making them, and talked with a number of experts about his experiment before doing it. He was responsible and made sure that he'd be at least informed on the subject, and had a way to call for help.
50 days without human interaction is impressive.

He could've done a lot worse.

Etc etc. If you constantly keep busy, you WILL survive. If you don't, you won't. End of. Your mind will literally just give in at some point, if you've constantly got a goal, something to aim towards, then you're more likely to survive
