What are some things I should take with me to my first ever hike/overnight trip? I will probably die but I want to at least have a chance of survival.

I'll be trying to summit a couple peaks in the Adirondacks this weekend, it is my life long dream to summit all 46 of them eventually. I already have all of those things you mentioned, I still feel like I'm missing some stuff, just waiting for my battery charger to arrive and I'm good to go I guess.

My recommendation is to go camping in a campsite that you can drive to first. You’ll get a good feel about what equipment you need by doing that. Then go hike in somewhere and camp in the woods.

Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, appropriate clothes, water, food, map and compass.

You don't need more than that to get on fine. The thing most people do is take a load of situational stuff or firemaking gear and not enough water.

Don't know where you live but I've seen them pretty often in stores around me. Bookstores will usually have maps for the state you're in.

If you want a good topographical map for your area or wherever you're visiting try MyTopo (mapstore.mytopo.com). They make and send good physicals of either designated sections or custom areas and print on a good paper. They have more than just topo maps I think but that's what most backpackers want.

Ultra budget option is to screenshot google maps satellite view and piece it together on microsoft paint.

if it's just one night, not much to worry about other than dehydration or getting lost. pack light, download a map on your phone and bring an external battery just incase it loses battery rapidly. I guess make sure boots fit well and ass some tape where you feel you might need it.

I always bring a small paperback novel or collection of short stories. Sometimes I bring some sudoku puzzles. It’s to chill out and relax before going to sleep.

It’s nice to have something sweet instead of just drinking water all weekend. I only drink water normally, so hiking becomes a time to cheat.

I'll echo what others have said and ask for more details. What is your current experience level like? Have you done car camping? Do you know how to build a fire/work a camping stove? What's the area you're going into like terrain/climate wise? What's your clothing situation?
