for smell:
thru hiking synthetics > wool
section hiking and short backpacking trips synthetic < wool
polyester can be washed and dried in reasonable time on a thru hike, wool can't.
merino takes longer to smell but once it does you're stuck with it the whole time.

nah i'm the anon who switched back to synthetics but icebreaker's merino has a very good hand feel and isn't itchy. i have a full baselayer of the light and heavy weights. it isn't cheap though.
almost all other stuff i've tried is awful, i agree with you.

'cause you'll be warm no matter what in a wool hat and i could tell that's not what you were asking for.
you want a nylon mesh ball cap, trucker cap, or boonie hat in the summer. pair any of those with a thin white neck gaiter to keep sun off your face. paper thin is ideal and skip the mesh if its possible to get sunburns with your hair length/density or if you're bald.
also you know the chin strap thing boonie hats have? you can get or make clip on ones if you'd rather a baseball cap. recommended if you're in a windy area or going high elevations.

+1 for icebreaker. Worn their thick base layer (150 or 200 i think) for years as my main t-shirts, and their underwear too. Not itchy, lasts super long, and doesnt smell even after drenching them in sweat, so perfect for thru hiking where you can't bring your entire wardrobe in your larp-pack.

wool is inherently warm because of its fibre structure which can retain air pockets even when wet. this lowers heatless by minimizing heat transfer.

wool is also amazing for prolonged outdoor activity in the mountains, no need to keep on putting on or removing layers.

I love my wool stuff bros, why did no one tell me sooner it was so good? I’ve been wearing one pair of wool undies for about a month now, I just take them into the shower with me in the evening and give them a rinse out (maybe use soap like once a week) and they’re good to go again. Way comfier than cotton and don’t get stinky like polyester. Who knew that something crafted by the universe and perfected through millennia would be so good.

I thought you weren't supposed to "wet wash" wool though? Which is part of why I haven't gotten any wool clothing yet because I have no idea how I am supposed to get the smell of smoke out of the clothing if I can't put it in the washing machine.

You can wash wool. Just use cold gentle and woolite then line dry it. I usually get wool/cotton or wool/poly blends. They have a bit more resiliency while retaining wool benefits.

one thing to add: for light weight thin wool garments like base layers you want to hand wash them in a bucket with a stick like the japs do. it will double or triple the lifespan. its a pain in the ass. its not worth doing on robust wool garments only delicates.

I have a stetson Sturgis crushable. Sweat band actually does a pretty good job of keeping my head cool despite it being a wool felt hat. Not crazy expensive.

It's not sweat free. The sweat band increases surface area, acts like an evaporator. Keeps that circlet feeling nice and cool. I would say it's good for up to about 85ish. For hotter temperatures I have a Resistol wildfire shantung panama hat. That's good about as hot as you'll wanna get.

anon's just saying there are wool hats that are acceptable in summer. those hats excel in spring fall and even non beanie weather winter. never said they're bad, its just summer right now.
think most anons can agree true hat min/maxing will usually involve a different hat for summer, rainy weather, winter/alpine. and winter/alpine requires a whole bunch of headwear you usually have to take helmets and shit on the serious stuff.

nice thing about both of those kinds of hats is they're also widely available basically anywhere in stores locally and acceptable ones can be had $10-20 of either type. if you go the straw route its worth the money to get a nice one, but cheap box store ones are acceptable and get the job done. my synthetic hats were $5 or like $8 each.
fuck em up on a thru hike or something? you can buy them anywhere for pennies.
i would tell anyone to buy a nice 2.5-3 season hat before i bought a nice summer hat though. those stetsons look great for that, might have to get one myself.

A project I just started is a wool insulated sleeping bag. I have access to sheep and free wool, and want to sew a baffled bag and stuff it with wool batting, as opposed to layering or shingle construction used by other wool sleeping bags, to try to reduce weight.

It's not a practical garment for multi day activities which is why it was so quickly replaced by fleece.

Neo-luddites forget that historic wool wearing peoples had enormous amounts of death by exposure, did everything they could to keep their wool dry, soaked their wool in oils, slept in caves and inns and when forced to spend time outdoors in rain used packmules and slaves to carry spare wool and built enormous fires to dry their wool

I would say depends on the use case, pure wool doesn't handle abrasion very well, mixing it with other fabrics improves this dramatically. Of course, if you had a sheep you could replace wool frequently, but if you want it to last you can go up to 20 percent other fabric and keep a lot of wool's thermal properties, though odor properties drop a lot with other fabrics

Perfectly practical for me as an undergarment, I have 2 sets of undershirts and underwear, air one out while I sleep and switch them before bed, works pretty well and no smells on trail.
The biggest limitation with wool is it does terribly as a windbreaker and as a waterproof layer

In terms of softness, it goes cashmere-->alpaca-->merino-->lamb, which is also the cost scale. You could also wear thin inner layers of cotton, or silk, to act as a barrier.

I dunno anon. I’ve got a wool wash setting on my machine that basically just sits everything in 40C water for an hour giving them a bit of a jostle every now and again. Seems to work well so far. Got an icebreaker 100% merino t shirt coming next week which I’m pretty excited about. Means I won’t have to wear my cotton t shirts any more thank god.

polypropylene mogs everything for base layers prove me wrong. all the advantages of wool and all the advantages of synthetic. the only downsides to it are that its bad for the environment, more expensive than polyester, and textile isn't manufactured in as huge of quantities. aka shit that doesn't matter one single bit when you're using it in the field.

wool isn't warm when wet, that trope is so wrong. wool looses less heat when wet.
polypropylene can have these properties if woven to have hollow fibers. it exists but i've only seen it on towels.
more importantly, its not needed because unlike wool polypropylene dries incredibly fast, and also needs less material for the same level of insulation (only recent textiles, it used to be worse)

nothing, because you're wrong. polypro handles moisture better than wool by a long shot, and polypro can be woven to have the same trait if desired.

you probably don't even know how it works. wool absorbs into the fiber's hollow center and has air gaps so there's less heat loss when wet. as a result it takes days to dry. this doesn't mean warm when wet, its still losing most of its heat retention, just not as much as synthetics.

there are a few flame retardant formulations of polypro, and a woven one has been used in firefighter gear before.
i believe its flame 'resistant' on its own, so good enough for campfires.

Stanfields 80/20 wool sweater henley is the best wool midlayer i've ever used. Merino is the thinnest micron wool, which also explains its softness. Other sheep have thicker micron strands, which in turn is more durable. The Stanfields is both durable, but feels like a looser weave. I have wool sweaters twice the weight as this with worse performance (swiss surplus sweater). And because it is more loose, it dries fairly quickly. I was on an all day fishing trip, where it rained 90% of the day and while my cotton undershirt was soaked by the end, my wool sweater midlayer was dry.

Which is weird because shearers only get paid like $3 per fleece. Granted you got to do a lot to it and there's all the upkeep costs of the sheep. But each sheep makes enough wool for like 4-5 sweaters.

Russian wool fabric on ebay, at a third of the price of german wool fabric (before the ukraine business that was - and I'm certain the guy who imported it priced it according to what germans are willing to pay, not according to what the fabric actually costs.) And even if you calculate the fabric cost, then look at the garment price - it's way over the top. Often, admittedly, because these garments are made to be luxury stuff, not simple and functional, but for us who don't care about appearances that's all the same.
