So I've been doing backpacking/hiking for a few years, but I want to move to doing a bit more serious off trail stuff over multiple days.

So more or less, I want recommendations on some new gear. Mostly backpack, boots, sleeping.

My current stuff kinda sucks when I've done previous long hikes. My last pair of boots started killing my feet after 2 days of hiking- so I need something that will be comfy over multiple days. And I need something when I sleep to keep the mosquitos off, while still being compact. Any anons out there who do off trail backpacking who can recommend the essential gear?

Boots and backpacks are something you wanna get sized in person. It'll help you out in the long run. Hunting pack will do you a bit better for abrasion resistance over a regular backpacking pack. I've only got experience with the latter though so I can't point you in the right direction for a good hunting pack.

Salomon Quest 4D has been good to me off trail through some thick brush, swampy meadows, and blowdowns. Kifaru packs are pretty durable and well made but they may be out of your price range.

If you are hiking at night I recommend Nitcores HU20 if you want lightweight. If you want something better but heavier then Wurkoss HD20 is another good choice

I second Salomon Quest 4d, very comfy boots. They are good for wider feet as well, I found boots such as Lowa to be much too narrow.

There's external frame backpacking packs, and I like those too. Like the Vargos ExoTi or an Osprey exos. I find they stand up a little better than internals. They're a bit heavier, but they carry weight better. But no, I mean specifically a hunting backpack. They're all external framed, but they're really heavy duty for carrying like 80lb+ loads instead of 40. If you're going off the beaten path you're gonna need more stuff and you're probably not going to be making huge miles so the durability and carrying capacity is a bigger factor.
Something like a stone glacier 3300 maybe.

I would bring trekking poles if you’re going to do off trail stuff in the mountains. They might look dorky, but they also might save you a twisted ankle or worse when you’re going through sketchy terrain.

Look most packs are fine except for osprey and the stigma it comes with.
Kifaru? Sure. Good. For the task. You better be willing to drop cash and know how to resell it if it's not to what you expect. You should look into Emberlestock, Alps, Wilderness Equipment, Mystery Ranch if you want hunting and have some specific functions.
For something that can tolerate off trail you want to avoid the usual reddit tier shit. If you must bank on regular packs, get some north face, decathelon, REI usual suspects. Tatonka, Mountain hardware or Deuter never get enough mentions nowadays.

Tas Tiger if you must have molle. Oh yeah that's the other thing. Molle isn't always tactical packs. But if you do get molle, get it on a well manufactured mil bag. Prefferably new and or reliable surp. USMC Filbe for example.

What you really have to ask yourself is why you are looking for a bag in anticipation of needs? If you have one just use that to failure and replace it with something guarded against said failure next time.

I went from
Two Caribees, day pack and a hiking one, (04 till 07),
to a Roman bke bag (07 to 08)
to a TAS Guide (08 to 11)
to a 5.11 Rush 24(11 till 15)
to a Wilderness equipment (15 till 19)
to a Platatac external frame from 2020 'till now

Between then and there I've loaned and used borrowed packs for task specific things. Hiking. Guiding etc. The one thing that matters most is that the bag works for you and that you are the one who has to put up with advantages and disdvantages.

Sleeping bags depend on climate. Give me a climate range and that gives everyone a limit on performance range to recoomend.
So for not informing us as to the conditions, you get reccomended a Snugpack Elite 3. Get a 4 if it's colder where you are.

Boots you should say what you last had. You can always get away with trail sneakers if you don't carry a big bag. So consider going ultra light if you can and you won't need the suppourt structure of boots. That's mostly for people moving with loads on the bag. Usually over the 30lb mark.
So Grisport, Mammut, Keens, Salomon if you have narrow feet, Merrels are okay. Lowas are popular at the moment because faggots on youtube finally went out enough to warrent knowing about them. For my money I like Scarpa. Give each of those a look and as always try them on in a store, then order them cheaper online. Make sure you get the same batch and build. Reviews will reflect the time they were done so always consider if boots have aged into being better made, or worse made as they change owners. Hyperlite going to mexican manufacture for example.
So if you can say what your last boots were, what temp ranges you want to sleep in, and at least a general idea of what continent, that would help a bunch. Also what's a long hike to you? Did you break your boots in? There's a lot of extra stuff that needs to be answered to give you better answers. If that makes sense.

But yeah, boots, bag and sleeping is a very good trilogy to ask about if you want to do more serious use. Good call on that. Hope you get back to this.

It is not an external frame pack. The bag can’t be adjusted or easily removed from the frame, nor can additional items be attached. The frame is made of curved aluminum stays, two of which just happen to be visible. The two lateral supports aren’t visible, and aren’t connected to the vertical stays. If you were to remove the bag (most likely by cutting it, as the frame stays are integrated), you’d be left with 4 separate pieces of aluminum tubing.

I have every iteration of that boot. They're probably the most comfortable and reliable boots I own. My only problem with them is that the Gore Tex fails faster in them than any other boots I own.

the further backcountry you go the more i would avoid alcohol because its the easiest to start fires with. get a canister stove like a pocket rocket or something. or a folding esbit stove.

how many days? that affects the answer.
buy your backpack as the absolute last thing, get all your other gear first. measure the volume of it using garbage bags of known volume. add a bit of extra space for food and wiggle room and because its hard to pack everything as efficiently in the field as at home. until you know this volume don't buy a backpack.

if you go with milsurp looking backpacks, or traditional backpacking backpacks, both of those styles are going to have a mess of compartments and a ton of useless straps and other bullshit. you could just take a pair of scissors to one of those and cut all the useless bullshit off of it, but there's also backpacks that are just designed more minimally and actually for what you're doing.
i would suggest looking at backpacks that are a middle ground between ultralight and traditional backpacking packs. ones that have the design of ultralight packs, but with an actual frame and suspension, maybe a hip belt and a few amenities.
very cheap - Take a pair of scissors to the pack you have and try to make it decent
cheap - ULA CDT/OHM
expensive - Seek Outside
as examples there's many other options in this middle ground style. avoid dyneema composite, standard nylon ripstop or xpac are both good off trail.
both those come with custom sizing so that shouldn't be an issue. get a buddy to measure you.

one thing i would suggest if you are doing a lot of off trail stuff:
have a plastic square stored in quick access, either a hip belt pocket, fanny pack, chest pocket, something like that. keep it next to the line you use to hang your pack.
use it when you take your pack off and set it down, even if you buy a super rugged backpack it'll slowly get fucked up over time if you just raw dog it on the ground.

nah here's some stuff to know
- pack liners > pack covers, for a variety of reasons. tl;dr they keep things drier, keep things easy to access, multi purpose, adds a bit of durability to the pack, and more. all the people you're seeing in wet climates with no pack cover are using a pack liner instead. trash compactor bags, cut to the size of your backpack are probably the most popular pack liner.
- the only upside pack covers have have over liners is they keep the backpack itself dry, since water = weight. i think its unnecessary because if its a concern you can just buy a waterproof (xpac/dyneema) backpack and not lose access to all your pockets. unless you're going through monsoons an xpac roll top bag with a trash compactor liner is gonna keep everything dry.
- ponchos do really bad in the wind. only exception is the packa. if you like the idea of a poncho seriously consider the packa.
- poncho replaces the pack cover.
- i think ponchos are viable in the summer if you know its not windy where you're going. when they do work they are nicer than wearing a jacket esp when its warm.
tl;dr i don't like ponchos (as a full replacement for a jacket) or pack covers. i live/hike around one of the wettest parts of burger land and i think most people agree with me based on what gear i see other ppl with here.

Don't know if there is snow or desert or water crossings to deal with. Don't know if there's leather rot risk in tropics or bad glue in arids.

Don't know the temperature range. Hard to reccomend a sleeping bag if they don't say what they are up against. Unless you guess and say some 0 degree as a standard.

Wants bag.
Isn't saying what he wants to carry, if he needs waterproofing, if he prefers bigger or smaller. More durable vs lighter contruction. Trail is easy but everything else is specific and could use some refference.

So we don't know what the previous Boots, Bag and Sleeping bag atually are, what materials, or how long it was used for. Was it bulkly? Cheap? Bad water proofing? Poorly optimised for the region? Wrong climate? Long distances. Short distances but harder terrain? There's a lot to consider before giving out any good reccomendations for replacement gear.

At least a list of what the bag boots and sleeping system was and why it wasn't optimal would help. Just waiting for >>2430515 to notice this and give a list those items and issues.

i'd still use a liner even with a pack cover. covers just don't really keep things dry. the area your back is touching is still exposed and water runs down it.

Depends on if you have lines for ridge tying and all that. If you are tarping a bungie strap and save a lot of hassle and give you an expediant way to put things up and take them down. Can do it with cord too just takes knot habits. Lots of guided knots and toggle based ways to do it. What you should do is figure out every bit of cord you will use, and I mean for sure. Pack that. Then pack 50ft extra but put away. I keep some internally on a carabiner for lowering my pack into places I have to climb down or into so that I can focus on my handholds.
First decide if you actually need cordage though. Most of the time you only need enough to hang bear bags, do the whole tarp or tent setup. Maybe if you trap or snare a lot reconsider it.

I’ve never taken this pack overseas, but I have flown with it several times domestically. I travel for work several times a year, and fly from Louisiana to Portland, OR, and I stay a few extra days when the weather is nice. It’s the same distance as flying from Greece to Ireland.

The beautiful thing about Portland is the transit. People on 4Chan shit on transit, but it would be insanely expensive for me to rent a car. There are shuttle and bus services that run between the larger towns (Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, Sisters). On three occasions I’ve taken a train then two buses to the Lodge in Mt. Hood, ate at the buffet, stayed the night, hiked around the mountain for four days, then took the same way back. Anytime there’s easy access there will be a lot of people, but flying and taking transit really expands what we can see and do.

Yeah nothing wrong with that. Rental shit is a scam most of the time. Domestics are interesting once you get into all of the last minuite ticket scalping tricks. It can be dicey for connecting flights though. That sounds like a good time. All you can eat before the mountain circuit had be comfy. I mostly use dry bags because I can use them to stash wet changes of clothes in big rains. Poncho is still my go to.

i gotta say this thing is working out really well. full range of movement to climb over or duck under obstacles. im really liking it for bushwacking. it didnt work so good right off the bat though i had to do a lot of diy modifications to get the fit right and it only works well if your load is balanced properly. thinking about making one completely from scratch out of lightweight materials and ditching the Mollie system entirely.

That's the size of a standard poncho tarp. There's no space to move around but it works. On the plus side it doubles as rain gear. On the downside, if you damage it while wearing it, it doesn't protect you anymore.

20L are for dayhikes and overnighters. 2 days max in the summer if you use a tarp or only a bug net as shelter.
30L is like, really trimmed down ultralighter, short trips.
45L+ anything more than that. you can get away with a lot if you're really ultralight.
also keep in mind UL people sperg about weight a lot more than volume so not all UL styles of camping will ever be able to use small packs like that. tents hammocks etc take up space.
and all these figures are for if you're sleeping on a foam pad stored externally with a frameless pack or something, thats more volume if you like a framed pack or an inflatable. (some people store inflatables externally, fuck that.)

It's pretty easy to fit 3 days of food and gear into a 35L but you'll be spending some good money on your shelter and sleeping system.

Do some research on ultralight hiking. Don't follow all the advice on spending $1000 on gear, but some things like switching out your sleeping bag for a quilt, or recommendations on smaller tents are good.

Bro, taking a small square of plastic is super popular. It gives you a dry place to sit, an area to organize food, a place to keep your feet clean when you stand up under a hammock tarp, and a way to keep your pack dry while setting up if you use a poncho.

Do you sleep curved up on your side, or flat on your stomach splayed out? If you curl up you can probably not go wrong with a small sized tarp. If you spread out, I'd get the next size up.
Next thing to think about is your flexibility/ability to do different pitches. A square tarp is more flexible that a rectangle. If you only intend to do an A-frame, get a rectangle.

"who does this" is probably no one in drier areas and like everyone in wetter areas. its a square of plastic you can do like 500 things with it. sit on anything and keep your ass dry, with less time to whip it out than a seat or anything. picnic spot when you're eating. good way to put backpacks down short term somewhere you might normally have to hang or say fuck it. makes a nice ghetto door/sun diffuser if you tarp. all the things anon said. a million other things i can think of.
you'll see different variations of the same idea, even small tarps, plastic square's just one of the more common ones. w/e waterproof material works.
